The research vessel RV PETREL located the wreckage of the USS Lexington (AKA "LADY LEX") on March 4, 2018. The "Lady Lex was America's second purpose built air craft carrier. She was lost in combat  on May 8, 1942. She was so badly damaged by attacking Japanese forces that the USS Phelps, a destroyer. one of her escorts, had to sink her to prevent her falling into enemy hands. Her final resting place was discovered as noted  by the RV PETREL operating in expedition led by Paul Allen , co-founder of Microsoft. The LADY LEX now rests in approximately  9,842 feet of water about 430 nautical miles off of Queensland , Australia. The identity of the LEXINGTON was confirmed by remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) which was able to confirm her markings and those of related nearby aircraft.
