The three videos above take less than 30 minutes to view and will give those new to the issues of the South China Sea, a place where U.S. Naval Forces on any given day are at high risk of direct confrontation with Chinese naval and coast guard forces; a quick background study on the issues. We follow the region in a series of posts that we label "HOW FAR WILL THE DRAGON SWIM". We try to chart the rise of China's extraordinary naval development, and their creation and deployment of the world's largest and only aggressive coast guard. The Chinese Coast Guard is the principle agency they use to bully their neighbors into ceding their own legitimate exclusive economic zones as defined in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and the earlier Outer Continental Shelf Convention. The posts in the HOW FAR WILL THE DRAGON SWIM series are generally short and focused on recent developments and assume a certain familiarity with the region and issues on the part of the readers. New readers don't need to have been following the issues since the beginning. We have added more than 100,000 readers since the first posts ion the series. Those interested do not need to read all of the previous posts to understand the next ones in the series. You just need a background understanding of the region and the issues. The above links take a little less than 30 minutes to view and will provide that understanding. We urge our new visitors to take some time to learn about the region and the issues if you are not familiar. We know from Prosser's educational theorem that we generally retain for any serious length of time only about 10% of what we read but at least 50% of what we see and here. That is why we have chosen a video backgrounder for those new to the issues. Video covers more information faster and the viewer retains more than the reader. Of course our blog is funded mostly by book sales so we urge you to read up on the issue as well. But for a fast, easy to retain, general background we suggest viewing the above linked videos.
