THIS MAKES THE DISPUTED SENKUKU/ DIAOYU ISLAND CHAIN JAPANESE STATE PROPERTY UNDER JAPANESE LAW. CHINA AND JAPAN, A NATION WITH WHOM WE HAVE A DEFENSE TREATY AND OBLIGATIONS ARE NOW DIRECTLY CONFRONTATIONAL OVER TERRITORY THAT HAS BEEN JAPANESE SINCE AT LEAST 1895. THE SELECTION OF LIGHTLY ARMED MARITIME SURVEILLANCE FORCE VESSELS BY CHINA SIGNALS SOME TREPIDATION ON THEIR PART, BUT IF THESE SHIPS COME WITHIN 12 MILES OF THE ISLANDS A SPARK COULD BE IGNITED. ALL THIS ON A DAY WHEN THE WHITE HOUSE MISSED AN IMPORTANT SEQUESTRATION DEADLINE PROBABLY AUTOMATING MASSIVE DEFENSE / NAVAL BUDGET CUTS.
