N. Korea stops rocket launch preparations: Report
Our Analysis: We previously reported on Japanese, South Korean, and American naval units deploying to monitor this launch. We predict the North Koreans will delay until the observer ships are off station then fire off a quick launch. Even if they fail in that attempt, they run up the cost of the allies monitoring. This is typical of the type of games played during the Cold War.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NAMAZU'S "WHERE IS THE MERCHANT IN THE U.S. MERCHANT MARINE, AND WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE AMERICAN WAY" continued to pull in record numbers of new readers all weekend. Not since we published "NAMAZU FULLY LOADED PARTS 1 and 2 , THE FUTURE OF AMERICA." have we seen this level of interest in a posting. We have decided to keep his latest post, nothing short of a diagnosis of what's wrong with America using the Merchant Marine as an illustrative case study and his blue print for revolution, to seize the bright future he described as possible in "NAMAZU FULLY LOADED....."up beyond the week end and at least through Monday. We have removed temporarily intervening posts and station ID/Notice Boards so that once the reader seeking out the several latest from Namazu finds the chronologically latest, they only need scroll down to find the new postings from recent days and TODAY'S BRAND NEW FEATURE THE LONG AWAITED INTERVIEW WITH NAMAZU (We finally get the first hand account of whats up with the giant catfish and blonde bombshell singer Oh Land.) Then there is the Namazu bonus feature that many folks missed. Just hours before we posted his latest block buster Namazu posted a short screed blasting the Secretary General of the UN for his illogical position on global climate change and how to mitigate it. So before he took down the Democrats, Republicans, Secular Humanists, the Media and "Yo mama" the big catfish called the head of the UN "a pea brained biped" after making his case with his usual irrefutable logic. He is not called "the Earth Shaker" for nothing. Probably inspired by Namazu's forthrightness, in between Namazu's two posts editor Johnas Presbyter blasted Argentina's latest bid to steal the Falklands. His annoyance is so palatable with Argentina that his style seems to fit right in with Namazu's analysis of America. We decided to leave it up between Namazu screeds thinking that you'll find it a real item of "infotainment". Hang on to your socks! The latest Namazu post isn't "NAMAZU FULLY LOADED REVISITED" its more like "NAMAZU UNLOADS ON AUTOMATIC ON STEROIDS WITH A VENGEANCE!" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A Namazu RewindNAMAZU ON KYOTO and SECRETARY GENERAL BAN KI MOON(Repeating an earlier post from the week past that many missed)Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki Moon addressed climate change at the International Climate Change Talks in Qatar yesterday. These most recent talks were held in anticipation of a UN attempt to forge an international agreement on climate change by 2015. Given the abject total and complete ignorance exhibited by Mr Moon in his speech and in his sidebar comments to the media; such an international agreement or even an extension of the earlier Kyoto Agreement, has a snowball's chance in hell of survival. Mr. Moon in his address charged that the responsibility for climate change is solely that of "Rich Countries". He stated that since the "Rich countries", his common code word for the United States, Canada, and the Nations of the European Union,were discharging carbon before we knew the environmental harm it could cause; it was "only fair and reasonable that the developed world should bear most of the responsibility in fighting the gradual warming of the planet." I may only be a giant catfish but I know addle brained drivel when I hear it. Its addle brained drivel because it is not fact based, utterly fails to address the issue, and simply promotes the propaganda line of China. The United States did not sign the Kyoto Accords for good reason, despite the vehement protests of all of the tree huggers in the United States and finger pointing by all of the Third World. Now Canada, New Zealand, and Japan don't want any part of it when it expires nor any part of anything that looks like it for 2015. If Mr. Moon had any command of the real facts he would know why his speech went over like a lead balloon with the countries he most wants to sign up for, and take responsibility for the goals of the proposed 2015 pact. First, the United States passed clean air and water acts in the 1970s long before anyone articulated any thoughts about carbon emission caused climate change. The United States started cleaning up its' act long before Kyoto without any demands from the international community. The United States and Europe were scrubbing automotive emissions long before Kyoto. China passed the United States in industrial carbon emissions quite some time ago and China's emissions increased by 14% last year. By Contrast the United States , a non Kyoto nation reduced its emissions again in 2012 by another 2%. If Europe agreed to China's demands and reverted to bicycles and shut down all of their industry achieving zero emissions over night, that would reduce the world's carbon emissions based on the 2012 reports by approximately 15% at most. That is what the entire European Union accounts for on the global carbon emissions count. As Mr. Moon was speaking the figures for China this year indicate a 14% increase in their carbon foot print. India, another nation exempt from any reduction requirements under the Kyoto protocols also had a double digit increase in emissions. Canada our neighbor to the north who did sign the Kyoto Protocols and was bound to reduce emissions actually had a 4% increase. Of all the countries on the planet only the United States and some of the EU nations, most notably Germany reduced emissions. The United States and a number of EU nations have been reducing their carbon and other emissions in air and water steadily since 1970. As the failed Kyoto agreement fades into the sunset the real polluters are still staring at the United States and blaming their own folly on one of the few nations actually doing anything. To say that the "developed world" polluted the planet before we knew the effects of these emissions is pointless and not very factual. Trees, vegetation, and the oceans plant plankton are constantly fixing, consuming or converting many of these carbon gases to oxygen. They are definitely over loaded at the moment, but that doesn't mean that all of the industrial pollutants of the century are cumulatively in the atmosphere. The problem is of more recent vintage and the mass of the problem is created now by China, India, Brazil, Mexico, and other "developing nations" that now know perfectly well what these gases do to the atmosphere Yet these unrepentant miscreants insist on their right to not only not reduce their emissions, but to increase them and charge the lesser contributors the bill for the damage they are causing in the global commons. Into this situation jumps Mr. Moon and throws the full considerable weight of his office behind this position of total lunacy. The United States was right to stay out of any international climate change abatement plan that amounts to a unilateral demand on the lowest contributors to the pollution of the commons to take full responsibility for the problem while the biggest polluters continue to increase emissions. This is why at the Namazu School of Climatology we just aren't interested in addressing carbon emissions caused climate change. Its a global problem that the real responsible parties refuse to address. So since America can't fix the problem we feel it is time to address self defense issues on the effects of climate change. Its time to discuss coastal building codes, food security , disaster recovery, and economics in the light of climate change from any cause. Since America is the only nation on the planet addressing the issue like an adult, then the planet will fail at any effort to stave off the actual climate change if one is coming. So lets just accept that if carbon emissions are changing our climate America is already doing what it can and it will be completely ineffective because the rest of the world is increasing their pollution levels while pointing a finger at America. So lets get on with our national effort to mitigate the damages we can't avoid. As for you Mr. Moon, you are not helping out, you are part of the problem. Kindly bite my tail fin, you pea brained biped. Editor's note: If you are new to our publication you may find this a bit unusual. Namazu is our 3,000 year old Japanese giant catfish, former demigod, currently employed as a coastal environmental analyst with American Admiralty Books. If you would like to find his previous first person writings we have an index by date in our INDEX and SITE GUIDE. Namazu lives at the bottom of the Sea of Japan and tends to see things "in depth", his insights often stun. Namazu is drawing an ever increasing following and we were asked to publish his list of recommended readings. Namazu's reading suggestions are so extensive that we simply can't do it in a single list but so many people expressed interest in getting started that we decided to publish what he sends in the way of a reading list updated as soon as we receive new materials. His recommendations tend to be related to his latest writings. We then link the suggestions to book descriptions and vendors. Our last update Namazu addressed maritime periodicals for the first time. If you would like to know more about Namazu, the "Catfish Perspective"and the "Read like a Catfish " program read the black letter section below. If you are a regular follower of Namazu, the black letter material has been presented before. You may want to skip to the next red letter paragraph to pick up on the remarks that Namazu recently sent over the hydrophones about periodicals.
People who have read "NAMAZU FULLY LOADED: THE FUTURE OF AMERICA" keep asking how this 3,000 year old catfish knows so much. Well, obviously being 3,000 years old gives one a unique and very deep historical perspective. While Namazu generally hangs out in the Pacific off the Sea of Japan he is a world traveler as his recent visit to our office demonstrated. Being able to take human form on rare occasions gives one an inter-species broad breath of perception. But how is he able to predict the future? Namazu says that the ability to predict the future was never in his union contract as a "demigod", a term he now describes as "unfortunate and inaccurate."He maintains that he uses the same type of analytic tools as human prognosticators but better quality, and of course he has that unique historical and global perspective. Namazu claims no future predictive accuracy much greater than the best computer enhanced, human team of forecasters. He does claim to use better data, some of it quite expensive as we learned in that little controversy over the "NAMAZU FULLY LOADED" references. We have asked Namazu to share with his fans a reading list that will help readers to master the Catfish perspective. He has promised to keep his suggested reading list within reasonable retail pricing and to stay away from suggesting some of the data bases that he occasionally accesses that costs thousands of dollars. So today we present the first installment of the NAMAZU READING LIST.

We did not realize that he had so much interest in naval affairs. Here is Namazu on maritime periodicals. Nearly all of the various maritime periodicals are available via hot links to their free E-versions in our NEWS SERVICE section. Namazu seriously recommends reading the periodical in our NEWS SERVICE SECTION but stated that he has a favorite maritime periodical that is far more than a subscription, it is for members, the U.S. Naval Institute. Namazu urges all of our maritime professional readers to join the Naval Institute and join him in reading the PROCEEDINGS "cover to cover" every month.

" To the human mind lacking in the catfish perspective one might think that life at the bottom of the Sea of Japan is quiet, dark, and just about completely out of touch with the life of the surface and the coastal zones. But those of you who read some of my earlier material know that I was well aware of surface life early on, since the debris of war at sea, and the wreckage of ships caught in storms often led to trash descending from what I once considered the "sky" onto my living room floor. Periodic trips to the surface similar to whale "spy hopping" clued me in to humans and their shipping. On annual morphs into other forms I began adopting human characteristics and visited coastal communities and learned quite a bit more. Printing came much sooner to China and Japan than it did to the West, but it was thousands of years before anyone was putting out really reliable and timely periodicals on maritime subjects. Then one day in 1874 about a year after its founding I discovered the U.S. Naval Institute and ultimately the U.S.NAVAL INSTITUTE's PROCEEDINGS.

This publication accepts well written, properly researched and logically reasoned articles from naval, and maritime professionals from the U.S. sea services and other navies, coast guards, marine corps, and merchant marines around the world. There are a lot of maritime periodicals out there. You can link into most of the really informative ones that publish E versions in the American Admiralty Books NEWS SERVICE, but my number one choice, the maritime periodical that I never miss and always read cover to cover every month is the NAVAL INSTITUTE's PROCEEDINGS.
My number one favorite article in recent months was CLOUD COMBAT Thinking Machines in Future Wars by Lieutenant (Jg) Matthew R. Hipple.page 49 of the July 2012 issue. I've seen the march of human technology since the very beginning. Mr. Hipple's grasp of the the very visible future of the technological potential impact on naval warfare dovetails with my thoughts on the economic future of America expressed in the 'NAMAZU FULLY LOADED' series. I described how technology is going to reduce the labor force needed to create the World's wealth and how things will have to change when the bulk of mankind can only find intermittent employment at best. In CLOUD COMBAT Mr. Hipple first paints a detailed picture of future developments in the growth of autonomous technologies in war and then confronts the questions of how to both exploit the advantages of these technologies and yet not remove so much of the human element from the targeting loop that war degenerates into a simple mechanized slaughter. He doesn't propose to have all of the answers for where the human mind must be in the targeting and attack decisions loops of the future, but he introduces us to the issue and forces us to think seriously about it. Mr. Hipple's description of the related technological "progress" raises our sense of urgency about the issue. Finally, he comes down squarely on the side of making progress on these technologies and adapting them to war fighting. I have to credit him with my favorite quote in at least the last five months from the many fine PROCEEDINGS articles:

Namazu seriously recommends reading the periodical in our NEWS SERVICE SECTION but stated that he has a favorite maritime periodical that is far more than a subscription, it is for members, the U.S. Naval Institute. Namazu urges all of our maritime professional readers to join the Naval Institute and join him in reading the PROCEEDINGS "cover to cover" every month.
He also describes his favorite article from 2012.

" To the human mind lacking in the catfish perspective one might think that life at the bottom of the Sea of Japan is quiet, dark, and just about completely out of touch with the life of the surface and the coastal zones. But those of you who read some of my earlier material know that I was well aware of surface life early on, since the debris of war at sea, and the wreckage of ships caught in storms often led to trash descending from what I once considered the "sky" onto my living room floor. Periodic trips to the surface similar to whale "spy hopping" clued me in to humans and their shipping. On annual morphs into other forms I began adopting human characteristics and visited coastal communities and learned quite a bit more. Printing came much sooner to China and Japan than it did to the West, but it was thousands of years before anyone was putting out really reliable and timely periodicals on maritime subjects. Then one day in 1874 about a year after its founding I discovered the U.S. Naval Institute and ultimately the U.S.NAVAL INSTITUTE's PROCEEDINGS.

This publication accepts well written, properly researched and logically reasoned articles from naval, and maritime professionals from the U.S. sea services and other navies, coast guards, marine corps, and merchant marines around the world. There are a lot of maritime periodicals out there. You can link into most of the really informative ones that publish E versions in the American Admiralty Books NEWS SERVICE, but my number one choice, the maritime periodical that I never miss and always read cover to cover every month is the NAVAL INSTITUTE's PROCEEDINGS.
My number one favorite article in recent months was CLOUD COMBAT Thinking Machines in Future Wars by Lieutenant (Jg) Matthew R. Hipple.page 49 of the July 2012 issue. I've seen the march of human technology since the very beginning. Mr. Hipple's grasp of the the very visible future of the technological potential impact on naval warfare dovetails with my thoughts on the economic future of America expressed in the 'NAMAZU FULLY LOADED' series. I described how technology is going to reduce the labor force needed to create the World's wealth and how things will have to change when the bulk of mankind can only find intermittent employment at best. In CLOUD COMBAT Mr. Hipple first paints a detailed picture of future developments in the growth of autonomous technologies in war and then confronts the questions of how to both exploit the advantages of these technologies and yet not remove so much of the human element from the targeting loop that war degenerates into a simple mechanized slaughter. He doesn't propose to have all of the answers for where the human mind must be in the targeting and attack decisions loops of the future, but he introduces us to the issue and forces us to think seriously about it. Mr. Hipple's description of the related technological "progress" raises our sense of urgency about the issue. Finally, he comes down squarely on the side of making progress on these technologies and adapting them to war fighting. I have to credit him with my favorite quote in at least the last five months from the many fine PROCEEDINGS articles:
"Change is inevitable, and the warfighter who refuses to stop living by the sword will die by the gun."
" I join our Chief Editor Johnas Presbyter in urging every maritime professional, but especially every Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, NOAA Corps, USPHS, and Merchant Marine professional out there, commissioned, warranted, enlisted, licensed or unlicensed to join the U.S. Naval Institute and read religiously the PROCEEDINGS. Consider giving an annual membership to your new grad NROTC student, Midshipman, Cadet, newly commissioned ensign, or newly licensed Third Mate. A catfish spends a lot of time quietly on the bottom, then once in a great while makes quite a show on the surface. That is the entire legend of "Namazu the Earth Shaker". Coastal Building Codes and Design:
This completes the 2012 Namazu Reading List. There are 21 books and one monthly periodical a reading pace of a little less than two books a month on average. One is a table top book that we all agree is far more than a table top boob of great photography but an important contribution to nautical history and design, but being a large table top book you don't have to read it quickly. If you complete all of Namazu's suggested readings you'll be well poised to fully understand his 2012 and early 2013 writings. But there will be a 2013 READ LIKE A CATFISH READING LIST. Don't be too concerned about being a year or so behind the giant catfish. The truth is we are all 3,000 years behind this nearly immortal sage.
