In The News:

There has been an accident aboard a British owned cruise ship in port at La Plama in the Canary Islands. Five crew members were killed. One of the cables and one of the hooks securing the lifeboat gave way during a launching drill. We have researched the American Admiralty Bureau Commentators and noticed that the Bureau has published and testified extensively on "rigging failure accidents". We will try to have a professional analytic post for you in the near future addressing causation in this accident and the prevention of rigging failures generally.Meanwhile here is a link tosome of th enews coverage of the event.

NEW BOOK RECOMMENDATION:

Product Details
by Steven Ujifusa, 448 pages published by Aimon & Schuster, New York.

As I write this in my office I am literally sitting under a shelf holding a two and a half foot long model of the SS UNITED STATES the ship that is the subject of this book. I often used this model in the past as a training aid in teaching nautical terminology to lawyers in continuing legal education classes, if you are a certin age you might remember training aids like scale models, mock ups, transparencies,or even movies. Then someone invented Power Point and real instruction was displaced, but I digress that is another subject. My purpose here is to recommend to you this new book by Steven Ujifusa. This is the story of the last Blue Riband winner in the transatlantic passenger liner service , one of th egreatest merchant ships to ever fly the American flag, and her designer.

TITANIC,MAURETANIA, BREMEN and the last of the great liners the UNITED STATES. Their era came to an end with the advent of transoceanic jet service. In their heyday they hauled the rich and famous back and forth across the Atlantic in style. They were sometimes near 1,000 feet long and the United States launched on June 23, 1951 averaged 35.9 knots on her first outbound trip from the United States. Depending on the time of year and departure time with the ability to often  put over 821 ocean miles in her wake Fredrick he formed Gibbs Brothers Company which made a name for itself converting the captured German  ocean liner VATERLAND into the famous  LEVIATHAN. Around 1929 the brothers merged with yacht designer Daniel Cox,s organization to form Gibbs and Cox as we know the organization today. This is the story of the ship, the design, and the designer. It should be of interest to maritime historians, model builders and lots of the general public.

NEWS UPDATE: CONTINUING COVERAGE OF USS GUARDIAN SALVAGE:

USS GUARDIAN  AMERICAN MINESWEEPER AGROUND IN THE PHILIPPINES

NEWS ALERT: USS GUARDIAN SALVAGE EFFORTS

As predicted in these pages:

US Navy pushes back USS Guardian salvage ops due to rough seas

"February 10, 2013
GMA News (Philippines)
Poor sea conditions forced the US Navy on Sunday to push back the operation to dismantle USS Guardian, a minesweeper ship, to pull it out from the Tubbataha Reef where it has been grounded since Jan. 17.
The US Navy team would continue the salvage operation when the bigger crane ship Jackson 25 arrives, said Coast Guard Palawan District chief Commodore Enrico Efren Evangelista.
Earlier reports said the first crane ship Smit Borneo from Singapore encountered anchoring problems last Saturday, causing a delay in the start of the salvage operation.
“Smit Borneo is there but could not anchor due to weather. Its anchoring should be precise. It tried (to anchor) but so far, out of the four anchors, only one had a good bite at seabed,” said Evangelista.........."

2nd salvage ship arriving next week in Tubbataha

A second salvage ship is set to arrive next week to help the Smit Boreo remove the USS Guardian, an American minesweeper that ran aground in the protected Tubbataha Reef on Jan. 17, the Coast Guard said Friday.
Coast Guard commandant Rear Admiral Rodolfo Isorena said US Navy officials informed Task Force Tubbataha that they have commissioned the MT Jascon, an 800-ton Malaysian ship, to lift heavy parts of the US minesweeper, which will be chopped into pieces by the Smit Boreo, a ship-borne crane.
