Diplomats in Geneva this week should pay more attention to the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines' long record than to the political sensitivities.

EDITORS NOTE: We don't normally expect to find astute maritime opinions in the general media but the linked opinion in the WALL STREET JOURNAL by Claudia Rosett is more than on point. Iranian merchant shipping has been caught in more than a few compromising positions of late relative to arms smuggling, sanctions evasions, and support of terrorist organizations. Iran is using European Union Law to get a hearing before an EU tribunal that potentially could soften the sanctions now applied against Iran. The United States is foolishly attempting to down play sanctions at the moment in the hopes of getting Iran to discuss its nuclear program in a non EU forum. The last time we attempted such a balancing act we lost the Scarborough Shoal to China for the Philippines. The two nations were in a naval standoff at the Shoal which is clearly inside the Philippines Exclusive Economic Zone when the United States intervened and seemingly convinced both sides to withdraw naval forces from the area. Both nations agreed. The Philippines withdrew and China didn't, surrounding the area with an even more powerful naval presence. America, as we have come to expect with this administration did nothing about it.

Clearly the EU should decide their case on the record of iran's national shipping company and pay no attention to washington. Texas led the way in passing recent nullification acts a formal way of telling washington that the states with nullification acts simply intend to ignore washington to the maximum extent humanly possible. we think that's good advice for anyone while the present idiots are in office....we are including both the white house and congress, both parties and both houses. below is the link to the wall street journal article"
