India's First Domestically Produced Nuclear Submarine Is Completed Sea Trials in 2012 Sea Trials
India's first domestically produced nuclear submarine underwent sea trials in 2012. The INS ARIHANT (Destroyer of Enemies)
displaces 6,000 tons and is powered by an 85 mega watt nuclear reactor. The sub can carry nuclear tipped missiles and torpedoes. While this is the first Indian built nuclear submarine, India has gained important experience in nuclear submarine operation through the purchase and subsequent operation of a Russian nuclear sub. India is joining a very small club of six nations that have a full nuclear "triad", the ability to deliver nuks by bomber, land based missiles, and submarine launched missiles. We covered the sea trials when they occurred in 2012. We continue to monitor the progress of the Indian navy, a navy we see as innovative, competent and increasingly powerful belonging to the world's largest democracy. We believe the Indian navy is a powerful force for peace in a very dangerous part of the world and hope that the Indian people will continue to support the nation's naval efforts.
