Parallels Between Ocean Transport History and the on going Commercialization of Space

Editor's Note: In our last post in this series comparing historic ocean transport development with the commercialization of space we described how the present state of space transport parallels the "long boat" vice the "Caravel". Unfortunately we didn't explain to our non-maritime historian audience the historic roles of the "long boat" and the "Caravel". This post addresses that issue.

"Proceedings: Do you think we will live to see a Man to Mars mission?

Capt. Readdy: Without question. If we really wanted to throw money at the problem , I think we could have gone ten years ago. It's no longer a question of technology. At this point , I think we need to focus on advances in propulsion technology rather than spending tens of billions of dollars on a mission that will take the better part of a year to get there and  almost the same amount of time to come back. Just as the jet engine eclipsed the propeller in World War II and the rocket engine was the enabling technology for our initial exploration of space , there is going to be another advance in propulsion technology. The science fiction writers , I'm sure, already know what it is. Whatever it is, it will open exploration beyond the Moon."

THE CARAVEL BOAT ESPERANCA OF PORTUGAL, LANTEEN SAILS DEPLOYED

We are in a long pause in manned interplanetary exploration, though we have a robot probe on the surface of Mars as we write these lines. We have made in space the equivalent of short coastal voyages, near earth orbital missions routine. We have made some interplanetary voyages to our nearest celestial neighbor, the moon. These missions developed the technology for the launch, repair, and improvement of orbital telescopes like Hubble that allow us to peer to the far reaches of the visible universe. In so peering we have learned that it is a far more vast place than ever before imagined and that planets , with atmospheres and water, are probably much more abundant than once thought only a few years ago. We are standing on the beach and looking out across that vast sea of outer space, with ever increasing knowledge of the far shore coming to us through our space telescopes and unmanned probes. But our long boats can't make the crossing. We await the development of the Caravel.

The long boat was known by many names and found in many cultures. The term as used here does not describe only the traditional and well known boat of Viking fame. The long boat refers to a variety of early vessels that were characterized by a single hull, propulsion by oar or paddle, and if sails were carried, these usually consisted of a single square sail. Such vessels made some incredible voyages. Indeed it is widely accepted that Vikings visited North America in their long boats hundreds of years before Columbus. The long boat underwent a long period of refinement under the hands of many nations. Once wealth began to move on the seas with any regularity distinct differences arose between long boats used for commerce and those used to protect or raid commerce, the first warships. An early version of the long boat purposely built for warfare was the Galley.

File:Trireme.jpg
A Trireme among largest and most complex of the Galleys, the long boat at it a high point of development

One example of this type of vessel found in the early Mediterranean was the Trireme, which by the fifth century had become the capital ship of the Mediterranean powers. Some were as much as 100 feet long and carried as many as 160 oarsmen. These were real ships, capable of real voyages, and quite impressive in their day. But the long boat at the height of its development was inadequate for repeated trans Atlantic or Pacific crossings and returns.  The long boat , in all of it's variations , was a coast wise vessel. One would occasionally survive a remarkable open water voyage, but no sailor in his right mind had any inclination to repeat such voyages. With its square sail and shallow keel, and primitive steering sweep  which precedes the true rudder, it could only sail in the most favorable of winds. With it's dependence on oars , and thus human muscle power, the caloric needs of the crew put severe limits on it's range. It's limited cargo capacity restricted  its' commercial utility. Its' relatively low free board and open construction made it vulnerable to heavy seas. The advent of routine transoceanic voyages had to wait the development of a more suitable craft. That craft would be a long time in arriving on scene and would develop from several different sources, ultimately to be perfected by most a unlikely source. The vessel that would open the seas to systematic exploration and commercial usage would be the caravel.

The first development that would lead to the evolution of the Caravel would be the lanteen sail. The lanteen sail , is a triangular shaped device similar in appearance to the sail of the popular small recreational sailboat known as the "SUNFISH". The lanteen sail reached its' greatest utility once wedded to a subsurface hull feature such as the extended keel, dagger board, or lee board. the lanteen sail coupled with these submerged hull features allowed a vessel to "tack"before the wind.

CLASSIC MODERN LANTEEN RIG SAIL AS USED ON VERY SMALL RECREATIONAL SAIL BOATS

To Tack is to sail at an angle across the wind., allowing a vessel to make actual progress in an upwind direction via zig zag pattern. The lanteen sail also allowed a vessel to sail off at a wide variety of angles from the wind without the necessity to tack. The first vessels to exhibit those features were the Arabian Dhows. But the Arabian Dhows were not destined to explore the great seas, some additional refinements were still needed. They would come from an unexpected quarter.
File:Dhow.jpg
A modern version of the ancient Dhow

The Portuguese were mostly farmers. It was their princes who led them to sea, a sea they often viewed as hostile. yet at sea these farmers turned sailors would perform most amazing feats. King Diniz was the first to realize that Portugal's future and fortune lay at sea.  In 1217 Diniz appointed a Genoese, Manoel Pessagno as admiral of his fleet. Diniz then launched an expedition to the Canary Islands and in order to encourage the shipwright's art, he knighted his foremost shipwrights. To assure his supply of timber King Diniz planted forests. Because there were so few Portuguese seafarers in the beginning Diniz never failed to hire Genoese mariners and shipwrights when needed. The Genoese had a long history of contact with the Arabs, had seen dhows, and adopted the lanteen  sail, sometimes mixing the lanteen with square sails for better performance when the wind was astern or "on a run" as modern sailors would describe it. Now they had a patron greatly interested in ship performance improvement. First the Genoese in the employ of the Portuguese and later the Portuguese themselves  would  improve on the basic designs that had evolved from the dhow. The hull form would be improved for lateral stability, freeboard would be raised , cargo capacities improved, but most importantly the sail plan was improved. Mizzen masts appeared, allowing the sail plan to be split, less sail could be carried in high winds and bent on in light airs. The oarsman, was no longer a crew position. Mariners were now sailors, milking the wind for propulsive power in all weathers. However, the full evolution caravel did not happen over night.

The caravel did not evolve directly from the dhow nor from the more round bottomed merchant ships of the day. Rather the caravel, the prime engine of the early age of maritime exploration evolved from the Dhow by way of humble Portuguese fishing vessels. The lowly fishing vessel had to be able to carry a substantial load , be sea kindly, not too labor intensive, and be able to get back to port before the cargo spoiled.  And so it was from a people late to seafaring , and from their most humble vessel designs that the vessel that would link the continents would evolve. when the NINA, the PINTA, and the SANTA MARIA pushed out into the Atlantic they were piloted by a Genoese navigator in the service of Spain who had no real way to accurately compute his longitude, but every confidence that his caravels would carry him to wherever he was bound and back. The humble but technologically superior caravels of Spain and Portugal would blaze the paths to the New World. Eventually they would be displaced by the full rigged ships of England, but had the caravel not appeared on scene when it did, the New World would be a lot newer.

The Space Shuttle in its hey day was seen as such an improvement over the Space Capsule that it was sometimes called the "caravel of the space age". But in fact the Space capsules in use prior, and still in use in the Russian and Chinese manned space programs , Space shuttle, and the Space Shuttle's successor are little more than early long boats. With these vessels we have gained valuable experience in space travel, but neither capsule nor shuttle can take us where we need to go, specially beyond our own solar system. We are waiting on the real caravel, perhaps two. In terms  of manned exploration and exploitation of our own solar system, our present means of propulsion is sufficient to carry us to Mars and beyond on long and difficult voyages that will rival those of the era of epic voyages that started in 1487. We simply can't get there in a long boat. When the caravel first appeared it wasn't faster that other sailing craft by any order of magnitude, it was its total package of sea keeping, carrying capacity, sail efficiency, and crew comfort that made it suitable for the long haul. We won't be sending crews on two and five year voyages in any ship we can launch from earth. The caravel for the age of exploration of the solar system will be built in space from components the size of the capsules and shuttles we have sent up so far.  The first sign that a real caravel is, and all of the subsequent design improvements are, about to arrive will be the construction of an orbital shipyard. And the next wave of solar system exploration will involve flotillas of these built in space craft, not single ships. The long boats won't disappear, they will be a cost effective fleet of ferries and personnel launches for transport to the ship yard and space stations for many decades to come. The real caravel will be built in space.

Then the process will begin again with totally different propulsion systems, "the warp drive", that NASA is working on even as we write. But the caravel for the exploration of space beyond our own solar system  will also be built in space. We could be in the long boats a very long time. We were before. This time we must foresee that the caravel is coming and be prepared to step on that distant shore. We must be prepared because our maritime experience with new distant shores tells us that lack of preparation can spell death and destruction for us and those we meet. We must prepare in advance  this time for first contact with everything from macrobiotic to intelligent life. We had better get this done before we get out of the long boats.

NAVAL INTEREST: STEALTH BOATS AND KAMIKAZE FISH

THERE HAVE BEEN A LOT OF STRANGE SIGHTINGS AROUND THE COLUMBIA RIVER IN RECENT YEARS OF LOW SLUNG HIGH TECH, HIGH SPEED BOATS.

Unmasking The Columbia River's Mysterious Stealth Boats

Tyler Rogoway has posted a story at FOXTROT ALPHA about strange low free board high speed boats and some semi submersible craft periodically spotted along the Colombia River between Portland and Vancouver. To us the photos look a lot like Colombian drug smuggling craft with higher production values. Rogoway maintains that they belong to the U.S. Navy and are SEAL team insertion / extraction craft. One of  his photos certainly does show some khaki uniformed personnel along with some middle aged bureaucratic types with coats and ties removed. Since they are all standing on a surfaced craft a stone's throw from some nice water front housing we have to believe that whatever they were doing wasn't all that secret. Its not our story, we have no opinion if the mystery of the Colombia River "stealth boats" has been solved. Remember we find and link you to English language maritime information, we don't produce it. We give opinions on it when we believe we command the facts. We don't know much about this story or source but it is sure interesting so click here: FOXTROT ALPHA see and decide for your self.

SUDAN'S PERSECUTION OF CHRISTIANS IS DELIBERATE, WIDESPREAD, PERVASIVE, AND DEADLY.

Sudan's Christians 'don't feel safe in prayer' after apostasy death sentence

EDITOR'S UPDATE; SINCE THIS WAS FIRST PUBLISHED Dr. Ibrahim her husband and two children were released from jail through the efforts of Italian diplomats, flown to Rome, met by the Pope and allowed to enter America. They are now residing in New Hampshire. Meanwhile those Christians in the Sudan who are not married to American citizens and haven't drawn international attention are being subjected to the noose. America continues to provide Sudan with foreign aid.

By Nima Elbagir, CNN
June 4, 2014 -- Updated 1016 GMT (1816 HKT)

"Khartoum, Sudan (CNN) -- "Father we ask that you stand with your child Mariam. We ask that you strengthen and support her and grant her your grace."
It's the Sunday service in Khartoum and the pastor is leading the Christian congregation in prayers for Mariam Yahya Ibrahim, the mother of two convicted last month for the crime of apostasy after a court ruled that she abandoned the Muslim faith.
It's crime she strenuously denies, maintaining both that she was raised Christian -- in spite of being born to a Muslim father -- and that she would have been within her rights to leave the faith. Neither statement has won her clemency under Sudan's harsh interpretation of Islamic law." READ MORE AT CNN
Sudan fully intends to flog and hang Dr. Mariam Yahya Ibrahim, mother of two and wife of American citizen Daniel Wani a naturalized American born in Sudan and now a legal resident of New Hampshire. She is accused of being a Christian, a charge she admits but maintains should never be considered a crime much less a capital crime. She is a medical doctor and mother of two by Micro biologiost Dr. Daniel Wani. Her two children a 20 month old son and a new born daughter are in prison with her. An Islamic court annulled her marriage to Wani as invalid because he is a Christian and have legally taken custody from the couple.Per the barbaric Sudanese version of Islamic law the children are kept in the prison with her where she has been in leg shackles, that the prison wouldn't even remove while she gave birth to her daughter, she was 8 months pregnant when arrested. According to the Sudanese barbaric custom they generally delay hanging a woman with a nursing baby sometimes up to two years, really how very kind! So Mariam  has no date scheduled for her execution as yet. Unfortunately the barbarian court also annulled her lawful Christian marriage announcing that she now was guilty of adultery and added one hundred lashes with a whip to the sentence to be carried out at some point prior to execution. She basically is now at the mercy of the prison medical authorities who wouldn't even cause her ankle chains to be removed while she gave birth. In short she could be easily beaten to death at any moment.

What we are learning as we follow this story is more than what CNN reveals in the linked article above. Christians are afraid to go to church or engage in any form of community worship services. While the government of Sudan points to the numerous Christian Churches in the country as evidence of its religious tolerance, they don't like to mention that the churches are emptying. Worse, we have read stories of church burning with police looking passively on. As we described in a recent post, we have also learned of other Christians put on trial for their lives though as demonstrated in the letter by a Sudanese Bishop their names can be hard to come by. Dr. Mariam Yahya Ibrahim is probably the tip of an iceberg of widespread persecution of Christians. We are learning it is not just run by heretical Islamic jurists but backed fully by the the majority of the people. Christians do not feel safe. We are only beginning to learn of this shameful situation because Mariam is married to an American citizen. The deeper we dig, the more we learn that persecuting Christians is a popular activity with perhaps the majority of non Christian Sudan.

But apparently the sniveling cowards and incompetent bureaucrats that run our federal government are content to take a wait and see attitude. Of course, if the barbarians actually hang this woman and take her children, who may well be American citizens depending on about 5 tests that were never intended to be applied to babies in the first place, these sniveling cowards, politically correct idiots will probably be relieved thinking that it will all go away, after all it is quite a bother. Heaven forbid that our intervention in this barbarism might actually offend some portions of the Muslim world. But then with the overwhelming majority of Americans being so inconveniently Christian inaction is not likely to keep cowards and idiots in office so they produce weak little sniveling coward statements like the one we printed for your review .  We submit that if any of them were real men and Americans they would accept this simple position. The husband of this Christian family is officially and legally one of us, an American. If the present occupant of the White House with his Kenyan father is a U.S. citizen then it shouldn't take a big leap of logic to declare that the two children of New Hampshire resident Daniel Wani are American citizens. We have a right to demand their release to their father and to back it up with military force if necessary. While there is the impediment of moral cowardice and unmanly dithering about to declaring the children's mother a citizen, she is already entitled by law to an entry visa by virtue of being married to Daniel.

One embarrassing aspect of this case is the bureaucratic delay in granting Mariam that entry visa in a timely manner. She should have been long gone from the Sudan if the Immigration Service had been on the ball.
If there were any real men in the administration the red tape would be cut away, the hiding behind bogus legal arguments and needless worry about global cultural diversity and a simple stance made. Here it is. This family is American now because the father is American by choice and has declared that to be the choice of his entire family. Our society can actually benefit from a pair of good Christian parents trying to raise decent children, and we could certainly use a another medical doctor and research microbiologist. Unlike the Islamic judges of the Sudan, and apparently the majority of the people we do not regard them as throw away people to whipped and hanged like rapid dogs. These are our people and we will not tolerate such treatment. We are prepared to intervene as forcefully as necessary to free the mother and children of this family and if they are harmed before being returned to American jurisdiction, there will be a terrible retribution meted out to the elite that presently rules Sudan.

Of course, such a policy would only work if applied by a government with some real men at the helm. Some of the left wing feminist will be offended by the idea that women occasionally need men to protect them. The the pacifists will complain that we would use guns to defend against a rope. The multicultural activists who think every culture except Western Christian culture should be vigorously defended will be deeply offended by such "bullying" of an Islamic nation. Real men would respond simply that we put American soldiers at risk in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Bosnia to defend Muslims and we see no reason why we can't use force to defend our own people. But the present administration has not manned up yet, the groups cited above put them in office. They would sooner see all of the Christians in the Sudan hanging from lamp posts than offend their non Christian persecutors.  After all they are only doing what barbarians do. So where do you stand? Have you called your Congressional delegation to tell them to man up and stand up for the Wani family? If not why not? Have we the people become as timid , self serving , and self absorbed  as our political leaders in Washington.

COUSINS OF THE NAMAZU TAKING OVER GERMAN RIVERS?

SMALLER COUSINS OF NAMAZU  (SOME UP TO TEN FEET IN LENGTH) ARE PROLIFERATING ON THE RHINE.

American Admiralty Books Safety & Privacy Policies   (Cookies and similar issues)

Not long ago we carried a series of blog posts on the "Colombian Exchange"a term that describes the exchange of organisms that occurred both as a result of deliberate introduction of new species into an environment where they did not exist previously as well as unintended introduction. "Exotic intrusion" is a term that describes the establishment of an organism in an environment where it did not previously exist and where the organism causes damages to native species. Most of our examples came from the United States. But back in January, before we ran the series on the Colombian exchange/exotic intrusion, we became aware of a major case of exotic intrusion taking place in Germany.

  WHO YOU CALLING AN INVADER????

Giant Catfish are increasing on Germany's Rhine River. Some of these giants are up to 10 feet in length. Normally reclusive and preferring deep warm holes in the river bottom, they appear to be increasing in number and at least seasonally ranging over a larger habitat. Fisheries experts speculate that this giant species loves warmer water and that the Rhine is warming up especially due to cooling water discharges from power stations dumping vast amounts of steaming water that is carrying heat away from the electrical generating system. Coupled with that, the Rhine has been invaded by by a small alien baitfish that the giant catfish appear to be able to catch and eat. So the giant catfish are experiencing an extension of range based on rising river water temperatures at the same time they have received a new protein source. So far fisheries experts don't seem to agree on the effect  the increase in Giant catfish populations has on the aquatic environmental balance in terms of endangering any native game or commercial species. German sport fishermen seem pleased with the development and quite willing to catch and eat the giants. Though in fact they aren't considered very edible.

We asked our own aquatic environmental analyst, the world famous giant catfish, former Japanese demigod, and now AAB regular staff analyst, Namazu for his thoughts on the increase in giant catfish on the Rhine. Below his famous picture is his comment:

D DAY ANNIVERSARY 70TH ANNIVERSARY IS TODAY

IT HAS BEEN 72 YEARS SINCE THE "LONGEST DAY"

Preparations for the 2014 ceremonies. Photo : U.S.Defense Video & Imagery distribution System

We are a bit lost for words on this anniversary but our  pal Vic Socotra is rarely lost for words and wrote on this day two years ago the following:

"It is the 70th anniversary of the invasion of Europe, and the beginning of the end of Adolph Hitler’s domination of Europe. There are still veterans alive who were there, and some of them have returned to the beaches where they landed, and changed the course of history.
The Presidents of the United States and the Russian Federation are there to join Francoise Hollande of France to commemorate the greatest invasion from the sea ever attempted. I have mentioned the contributions of intelligence to the war in the Pacific- and it is worth a note that the incredible advantage of the ULTRA program to decrypt German military communications gave the Allies."

Vic has published a unique personal account of one contribution to the battle by one member of his own family's "Greatest Generation: Find it at www.vicsocotra.com

HERE ARE SO PHOTOS OF THE ACTUAL EVENT COURTESY THE ARMY HISTORICAL CENTER:

Some boats didn't make it to the beach yet some survivors of sunk landing craft did gain the beach and joined the fight.

Eventually the "Greatest generation took the beaches and moved inland, the liberation of Europe from the Nazi had gained unstoppable momentum thanks to the incredible sacrifices of an entire generation of American, British, Canadian, and other allied forces. Without this victory the World would have entered a dark age of Nazi dominion. What followed hasn't exactly been peace, but it hasn't been nuclear holocaust, or a dark age exactly except serially in isolated spots like the Sudan where hanging Christians is becoming alarmingly common and conducted by a government whose own constitutions supposedly assures religious freedom, Syria where the government cheerfully has used chemical weapons on its own unhappy population, Iran run by mad men. Groups of mad men still dream of taking over the world. But no one has ever come as close as Nazi Germany and on this day 70 years ago the whole world not already under their jack boot stood up and put the Nazis to a bad end. On this day may the remaining and evolving tyrants take a lesson.
