OUR MISSION"The Mission of American Admiralty Books is to serve the public interest in marine safety, maritime security, maritime operational efficiency, oceanographic progress, maritime environmental protection, and recreational safety on the water. We do this through the effective organization, explanation, and  ready retrieval of important titles of the world's authoritative technical and general interest maritime literature. We also seek to aid the serious student of history or literature in the maritime milieu, and to help the Admiralty Bar drive "junk science" from the admiralty court room through the astute use of marine regulations, codes, standards, and authoritative literature. In furtherance of that mission we are engaged in the never ending review, evaluation, and reorganization for ready retrieval and understanding of the main body of English language nautical publications."

THE MISSION OF HELIOS RUEHLS, INC.
Helios Ruehls, inc. is a networked "skunk works". "Skunk works refers to a research organization for hire, one that is not connected to a university, the government, or the R&D department of a large corporation. As such we may be hired for projects by any of the above mentioned entente's.  By "networked" we refer to our "sweat equity stockholders" who are in fact tenured university professors who own a piece of the company but when not working on our projects are paid as teachers and researchers in typical university settings. Helios Ruehls' low overhead reduces costs; and cost are the primary reason why clients want to send two types of projects our way. We operate on the cutting edge of science where the commercial applications are as yet unknown, and in the mundane areas where there is an issue requiring management's attention but cost are a major consideration. We also do some projects on our own initiative on pure speculation. Another growing source of revenue for us is publication. Hence the formation of our marine division and the aquisition of this blog. Our aquisition of this blog came on the heels of the adoption intoU.S. law of the International Safety Management Code (ISM). Over time this code will generate much need for continuing legal education (CLE) courses and reference works. As it happens our staff contains licensed Master Pilots and Master Mariners familiar with the code and indeed one Master Mariner is a certified ISM auditor.

If you have questions about the ISM code or our other services in the maritime sector, optical physics, or any other research field contact us by writing:

THE GOAL WE ARE ALWAYS WORKING  TOWARDS

The goal we are always working towards is the evolution of a single web site for at least the start of research for any and all nautical or maritime information. We don't hesitate to hyperlink to other more specialized sites, or to hyperlink to useful or even simply entertaining videos. Our task may always be one in progress because the body of work is so large and growing. But at some point our constant efforts will result in a critical mass of content, and organization that will cause this site to evolve into the Internet's nautical/maritime main library.

Help us get there by checking here first for all of your nautical/maritime information needs. We also try to be entertaining as a library sometimes can be. Come to just browse. Come just to check our progress, come to join in discussions.

In A Nut Shell : Our mission is to help you find the right book or video or hyperlink for your purpose and to deliver other useful information in the maritime arts and sciences.  If we are the only name you can remember in maritime related research from technology, commercial endeavor, to admiralty law; if you can get here you should be able to get to the rest of the information on the Internet readily.

AAB WORKED IN COOPERATION WITH HELIOS RUEHLS ON A VARIETY OF MARITIME RELATED RESEARCH PROJECTS AND WE ARE NOW IN THE PROCESS Of SHIFTING OWNERSHIP OF THE AAB ENDEAVOR TO HELIOS RUEHLS, INC.  AS A HELIOS RUEHLS, INC ENDEAVOR THE BLOG EVENTUALLY WILL ACCEPT ADVERTISING AND SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH FUND RAISING. WE ANTICIPATE A RATHER LONG TERM EVOLUTIONARY APPROACH TO INTERGRATION OF EFFORTS.

ABOUT OUR HYPERLINKS:Hyperlinks like the one above to our introductory video are found mixed throughout the site and generally lead to free videos relevant to the subject above or below it, or such hyperlinks may appear in the text itself. Occasionally these html type hyperlinks may lead you to a book or document from a vendor or free site other than Amazon, or on line periodicals. Elsewhere you may find icon style hyper links like the one below.

These icon style hyperlinks generally bring you to an Amazon book description. AMAZON provides information and sales on nearly all books in print,so we link to them frequently but we are not an Amazon associate or portal. Louisiana residents are reminded that they are personally liable for state and local sales taxes on all items purchased over the internet. As a non vendor we neither track nor collect taxes on items purchased through sites we may link to. We receive no revenues from any linked sites, nor do we receive advertising revenues. All readers concerned with "cookies" and other forms of data capture should be aware that this site does not issue cookies per se but Google our platform provider and any of the many sites you may link to from here also generate cookies, if this concerns you please read :

If you are looking for a library loan don't forget to look for the International Book Binding Number ("ISBN") as well as title, author, and publisher. We include the ISBN numbers in many of our book reviews but they are also in the Amazon book descriptions if you scroll down far enough. The ISBN number is the surest aid in securing a library loan, especially if your librarian must instigate an inter library loan.

We are not the only maritime web site but we seek to become the most comprehensive and the one name you can remember to find any other site. As stated before we provide links. But at least one web site has been specializing in maritime links since long before we entered cyber space. This site doesn't have everything, for one thing, they don't seem to have a link to us. But they do have several of most anything. This website has been called the "Mother of All Maritime Links": We refer to it as element one in our "BIG LINKS LOCKER"( See the bottom of our home page)

THE EVOLVING  SPECIAL SERVICES OFFERED ON SITE

You may often go to a physical library to use a computer or special collection, or seek the help of a librarian. We are evolving special services in a similar vein. Below is a description of what is up so far.

1. Special Legal Research Tool: In the Admiralty Law Section we are incorporating hyper links to unique maritime legal research sites and a hyperlink to WESTLAW.

2. Ben's TECH Corner: In the Navigation section we are building a site that helps the navigator use his laptop in coordination with other electronic navigation devices for more effective navigation and voyage planning.

3. SPECIAL"INFOTAINMENT" FEATURES: Such as "LISTEN TO THE OCEAN" where you can listen in real time to acoustic listening devices at various locations at the bottom of the World's oceans, and A VIRTUAL DIVE site, visit the bottom of the sea from the comfort of your computer nook.

4. Marine Videos: Are currently spread all over the site but check the Index and Finding Aids section as we are starting to identify what we have and where to find them.

5. News Service: We provide a maritime headline service and hyperlinks to all of the best known maritime news papers, magazines, and trade journals with on line editions. There will be more special features as we evolve.

Check in frequently.  Within these pages you should be able to find most nautical and maritime books of consequence in print, search-able by subject matter and cross referenced. You will also be able to find a great deal of free expert advice and information. If you are an admiralty lawyer seeking marine regulations, codes, standards, or authoritative literature there is no better place to start your research (Be Sure to check out our AUTHORITATIVE LITERATURE PAGE). If you are a merchant mariner or recreational boater looking for reference and study materials, again its all here. If you are an oceanographer, commercial or sport fisherman, or ship model builder, you've arrived at the repository of all things nautical or maritime. Here you may identify books and other references in print that are needed to fill your information needs.

FREE GUIDANCE AND AUTHORITATIVE LITERATURE Have you ever wondered in a world of competing publications how you might determine which are considered authoritative? We have free guidance for you to help determine authoritative literature from the "also rans". If you are facing a professional Coast Guard administered Merchant Mariner's examination have you ever wondered if the Coast Guard published a recommended reading list, or from what publications they draw their examination questions? You'll find advice on that here in our Merchant Marine Interest Section for deck officer candidates. For Marine Engineers you can find similar material in our Marine Engineering Section. You will also find reviews of the nautical and maritime literature of the world that cover the publication in depth and broadly enough to assist you in determining the best purchase for your purpose. We also try to provide discussions, free down loads, interesting articles, and entertaining and informative videos on a wide variety of maritime subjects. These subjects include both the amateur and professional or technical side of diving, and recreational subjects like sailing, rowing, paddle sports, surfing, and deep maritime technical applications like vessel traffic systems. Our most visited special interest section is Boat Building, which includes model boat building.

The nautical arts and sciences are second only to law in the western world as an organized body of knowledge. At a time in history when medical practitioners were bleeding patients, Henry the Navigator was operating his highly organized and fact based "school of seamanship".  American Admiralty Books brings to the Internet, organized and guided access to the universe of nautical and maritime literature and references.
