Cick on the link above to learn all about Coral-bot

This is actress Jeri Ryan she is not a Coral-bot, but we think she did play a cyborg on TV once ("7 of 9" on Star Trek Voyager?). We lifted this picture off of her profile photos in her "Google Plus page". We hope she doesn't mind. We simply wanted to credit her with informing us about the Coral-bot project. The real coral -bot is on the smaller photo.  Jeri of course is more photogenic than the Coral-bot and we wanted to be sure you read this. We learned about the Coral-bot from Jeri's social media page ...I think Google Plus (Link below photo). If you click on the hyper link in the headline you'll be following Jeri's link to the Coral-bot video where you can see a prototype in action. This is one cool submersible and a game changer on coral reef restoration in terms of labor costs. Even where volunteer divers are used, they have to pop for some serious travel and lodging costs. Putting people on reefs for repair work is expensive, somebody has to pay and there is not always someone ready and willing. Our own "Captain Ben" who runs the Oceanography and navigation pages, and Ben's Tech Corner once managed a coral reef restoration project. He called it a "serious Sgt. Bilko operation" his way of describing a need for imaginative solutions to stretch seriously limited funding.

The Coral-bot is a great idea but like so many great ideas in the realm of ocean clean up and repair its a non profit idea. Donations are needed. You can donate as little as a dollar on line. We'll be talking a lot more about this idea in our diving section as the week wears on. We'd love to see our readers, especially our divers and fishermen readers help put the Coral-bot development fund over the top. If you do donate tell them Jeri Ryan told you about it. Click on the link below for a video that explains all. If you are a diver don't forget the organization we featured a few weeks ago GUE, Global Under Water Explorers, they are a permanent feature in our Technical diving section. If you would like to receive technical (penetration, cave, wreck, mixed gases, etc.) diving training and get some instructor led experience while assisting university underwater research and environmental mitigation projects. Even with a fleet of Coral-bots such projects still have tasks that require a human hand , eye, and brain underwater. Coral-bots will make coral reef restoration much faster , cheaper , and effective but human divers will still be needed. This is the nature of ocean damage mitigation today, largely volunteer labor and little funding.

TECHNICAL DIVING: RE-INTRODUCING GUE

                                                 Global Under Water Explorers

Among other things Gue will still be providing diver support to university led underwater projects after Coral-bots have taken over the grunt work.
PHOTO FROM GUE WEBSITE http://www.globalunderwaterexplorers.org/training/gue-course-descriptions

In today's blog space Actress Jeri Ryan introduced readers to the Coral-bot project. we hope that you will donate to it. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/376482095/coral-bots-teams-of-robots-that-repair-coral-reefs The Coral-bot will greatly increase the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of many coral reef repair, re-establishment, and restoration projects. But such projects will continue to require diver support. GUE (Global Underwater Explorers) provides advancing recreational divers with the opportunity to receive technical diving instruction and gain instructor led technical diving experience while supporting university sponsored research and restoration projects. If you are a certified recreational diver interested in safely advancing to more exciting technical diving and helping the ocean environment at the same time we highly recommend a donation to Ocean-Bots and a membership in GUE. Below is our original article on GUE.

In our TECHNICAL DIVING PAGES before we introduce any books for sale we take pains to define "technical diving" very broadly as almost any dives that involve overhead obstructions like cave, and wreck diving, or required timed ascents and decompression. We remind our readers that technical diving may require referral to books but you can not progress from a basically certified recreational diver to a cave, or wreck, or deep diver without formal competent instruction and some instructor led experience. Thanks to some help from the Google Diving Community we are now starting to describe sources for such instruction and instructor led experiences in our TECHNICAL DIVING page.

One organization that really struck us as the place for newly qualified basic certified SCUBA divers to find a source of excellent advanced instruction, plus instructor led experiences is GUE, Global Under Water Explorers. More over by affiliating with GUE the advancing diver will experience technical dives that add to oceanographic research. Many GUE diving vacation experiences combine instructor/dive team leader supervised technical dives with research support of specific university underwater archaeology, and oceanographic research projects. With Gue advanced recreational divers help advance the world body of knowledge of physical oceanography, marine biology , and underwater archaeology.  One thing about GUE to keep in mind, they like standardized equipment for their entire dive teams for their technical diving expeditions, so you will want to affiliate early, before you invest too much in equipment. As a member of GUE advancing recreational divers don't just advance in technical diving skills and knowledge they help advance the world corporate body of knowledge. With active participation in GUE, your hobby can be spoken of as a "Career". When you finally get too old to strap on the tanks you'll not only have a variety of vivid diving experiences to recall, but also a "body of work" in terms of your contributions to specific university research projects.

If you are interested in taking up diving, or advancing as a recreational diver, or even if you are an experienced commercial diver, visit our rapidly evolving DIVING and TECHNICAL DIVING pages. We thank all of those in the Google Diving interest circle who are helping us build a more informative reference for you on diving every day. Our mission is to spread and make more readily available and organized all maritime knowledge available in the English language. We really like GUE as they are also about spreading and increasing maritime knowledge of the undersea realm. If you are a recreational diver with just basic SCUBA certification for your own safety we urge you get formal instruction and instructor led experiences before venturing into deep, wreck, or cave diving. By doing so through GUE you turn not only your instructional experiences and vacation diving into a safer avocation, but you turn them into a contribution to the growth of oceanographic knowledge. Our diving related pages are not the only source or perhaps the best source of diving information, but we strive there to help you find the best sources, this what we mean when we call ourselves "Your Portal To The Maritime World". When we find a source of knowledge we link you to it, we never try to glue you our site. Please support our work by buying your maritime books here, checking out our advertisers, and starting research here. Help us build access to this world body of knowledge by using the comment section when you have something to say that can improve our performance.

AMAZINGLY THE NEW POPE AND THE OLD CATFISH AGREE:  Beware of Ideology.

  Francisco (20-03-2013).jpg
NAMAZU, AAB ANALYST                                     POPE FRANCIS, BIG LEAGUE CHRISTIAN

Those of you who are regular fans of our famous 3,000 year old giant Japanese catfish commentator and analyst may remember Namazu's now famous defense of the re-employment rights of former demigods. This was the essay we published from him when elements of the Christian Right opposed our employment of "an obvious pagan". Namazu explained that as a personification of forces of nature "demigod" was not a job description that he personally chose but one thrust upon him. He then made the impeccable theological argument that as a catfish he was ineligible for baptism, or for that matter, induction into any human religion. He confessed that he personally is a mono theist and non biped and opined that his 3,000 years of observation of human societies made his opinion and insights valuable. That was the last we heard of a negative nature from the "Religious or Christian Right"about Namazu. We presume that at least some conservative Christians are among his readers today.

As Namazu's popularity rose and readers became more interested in his various insights we published his now famous series of essays that began with NAMAZU FULLY LOADED, THE FUTURE OF AMERICA. (Visit our Index Page to find previous Namazu articles by date in the blog space). As that series neared its conclusion the big catfish warned the American people about ideologues in both parties, in the Congress and in the White House. He warned against forming public policies based on "isms" including conservatism and liberalism. He suggested that American voters start abandoning party registrations and vote independently and start looking for potential office holders who made policy and appropriations decisions based on pragmatic considerations that incorporated respect for the constitution and morals. The Namazu tests for legislation would be:
 (1) Will it work to solve the problem?
 (2) Can we afford it?
 (3) Is it constitutional?
 (4) Is it moral, honest, fair, just, and likely to remain so in implementation?
These obviously are not the tests of the dueling ideologues presently in office.

Namazu articulated all of this months before Pope Francis was inducted into office. In the April 27, 2013 issue of the Catholic newspaper  "CLARION HERALD" the paper reported an address by the new Pope Francis to a congregation of employees of the Vatican printing press and newspaper. In that address Pope Francis warned the Vatican press employees of the dangers of viewing the Christian gospel through the eyes of an ideologue. He noted..."These ideologues cut off the road of love, and also that of beauty....". Pope Francis speaking of ideologues and the gospel also said; "Every ideological interpretation, wherever it comes from-from one side or the other -is a falsification of the Gospel. The new Pope had a harsh assessment of what ideologues become; they....."end up being intellectuals without talent, ethicists without goodness. And let's not even speak of beauty , because they understand nothing of that."

Namazu was floored after reading the Pope's remarks. He felt the Pope had articulated exactly his feelings about ideology and ideologues but in far more elegant language. Since Namazu has been largely an observer of the Pacific Basin he wasn't too familiar with Italian saints. We had to explain to him that St. Francis whose name the new Pope invokes is the patron saint of animals who was famous for kindness to all living creatures and would preach the gospel to birds and animals when the bipeds refused to listen. Namazu was immediately taken with the idea of "a biped who sought out and spoke to non bipeds". Namazu has become a big fan of St. Francis and has asked us to ship him a St. Francis medal, and he is a big fan of Pope Francis who he regards as a "kindred biped spirit" and is working on reception of the Vatican radio channel on his hydrophones.

Well we wanted to assure his many fans that he is still working and that we are going to send that St.Francis medal and even spring for modification of the hydrophone system. But we must ask you to stop sending those cards, letters and e-mails about hiring that cube farm of research assistants that he keeps bugging us for. We simply can not do that until advertising and sales revenues are up to the point that will sustain the costs. Only ideologues of the left engage in deficit spending in peace time. However only ideologues of the right would refuse to improve service or product performance and worker living/working conditions when they can afford to do so. Please rest assured that Namazu will get his "minions" as soon as we can afford them.

Johnas Presbyter, Editor in Chief

NAMAZU ON GAS PRICES

Up Dated 1/3/2015

NAMAZU ON THE PRICE OF GAS AT THE PUMP

Namazu , Giant Japanese Catfish And Former Demigod Turned Analyst

Bipeds, lend me your ears. I wish to expand a bit on some observations and opinions and advice I offered in my series "NAMAZU FULLY LOADED,  THE FUTURE OF AMERICA. In the final portions of that series I predicted that 'Tight Formations" or "Tight Sands" discoveries of oil and natural gas were poised to make the United States a net exporter of first natural gas, and later refined oil products. I still believe that, but never intended to imply that the price of gasoline at the pump in America was ever going to decline. But in fact in the winter of 2014-15 it has. I would caution however that the price situation is temporary for many of the same reasons I cited in disclaiming that rising U.S. Oil production necessarily signaled a decrease in price at the pump. The problem is that all of the new oil being discovered not only in the United States but around the world is expensive to produce. Drilling and production methods for "DEEP WATER" areas and on shore "Tight Formations" are technologically complex and expensive. The oil companies can't sell their product for less than the cost of production. There is very little production of cheap oil going on out there.  U.S. shale oil production has wellhead  costs that require a minimum break even price of $55 to $80 a barrel. Russia, another oil producer coming on line stronger every year, has a break even cost at the well head of about $120 a barrel. Saudi oil is running about $90 a barrel break even price at the well head. Together Saudi Arabia, The United States and Russia account for about 35% of the world's production. Oil prices are set by the highest priced producers. Everyone with cheaper oil pegs their price with the abundant but far from cheap oil of the big producers. This is generally true, but the recent glut of oil has caused a serious drop in price at the pump. OPEC has responded not by cutting production but by maintaining production contributing to the glut. Just as OPEC intended, U.S. producers are starting to choke off some production and delay some exploration. When backlogs are reduced gas prices at the pump will rise. The U.S., having relatively cheap to produce oil and an abundance of it, will tend to be a stabilizing influence when pump prices reach serious U.S. Consumer resistance levels again. The likely hood is that gas prices at the pump will tend to cycle but the constant pressure is on at all times to keep gas prices at the pump consistent with making a profit out of the most expensive to produce crude oil. We advise all consumers to continue to favor fuel efficient vehicles and practice fuel economy.

Enhanced International Cooperation by oil producers, if it ever happens, will tend to stabilize prices at the highest levels to assure profits for every producer. Continued competition will drive continued periodic fluctuation in prices always cycling back up. Ultimately both the producers of $80 a barrel oil and the producers of $120 barrel oil benefit from prices that support the production of the most expensive oil. With competition there will be some cycling, With cooperation there may be stability but at very high price at the pump levels. The consumer's best protection is still fuel efficiency including gasoline elimination as in the electric vehicle, and alternative fuels vehicles.

If ever some vast new source of cheap to produce oil were to be discovered in sufficient quantity to drive the price of oil below the well head break even price of the present big producers they would simply cap the wells until the cheap oil was expended. (This is now happening)  They are finding oil off of Greenland, but that won't be cheap to produce, and Alaska's North slope will be even more expensive. If there is any area on earth where large amounts of cheap to recover oil might be found it is in the China Seas. Unfortunately since China demands ownership of all of it even at the expense of her neighbors , even at the demand that neighbors cede lawfully held territory to China, the unrest in the area effectively blocks any large scale exploration or production. Off shore oil companies need stable leasing authorities in peaceful seas, not potential war zone and litigation over royalties. If there is any cheap oil in the China Seas the Dragon's greed will keep it off the market for years if not decades.

Another factor upholding well head prices is the growing list of non producing nations with growing oil consumption. These nations pay a premium for oil to insure that they get enough. In 2012 Phillips 66, Valero, and Marathon oil exported over 531,000 barrels of refined American product from America to these premium paying nations. Despite Republican promises associated with the "Drill Baby Drill" campaign you will probably never see $2.50 a gallon gasoline again. (OK, we missed that one) But keep in mind the personal investment advice that I gave you in NAMAZU FULLY LOADED, THE FUTURE OF AMERICA. Don't invest in oil drilling and production companies. Their fortunes are linked to the rise and fall in crude oil stocks, impossible to predict or control and subject to constant government meddling.  Invest instead in the stocks of petroleum refiners and transporters. These will be around regardless of prices at the well head and charge what the market will bear over their costs. But you must examine these in the same way that you would examine any corporate stock. You want the tanker operators, pipeline owners, and refiners who have savvy management, and sound financials. Use caution, seek professional advice and invest in oil and gas transportation and refining; they are going to be moving a lot of oil and gas around the planet in the coming decades. Improve your personal wealth. Waiting around for gas prices to fall at the pump is a pipe dream. Invest , make more money then pay what you have to at the pump, you're going to have to pay the elevated prices periodically anyway.

I hope I didn't burst too many bubbles, but based on some of your e-mails ,a few of you tend to grab onto some of my pronouncements and run with them in strange and dangerous directions. Get that catfish perspective, look at things in depth, before you gulp!

Peace and prosperity biped friends, and thanks for reading my stuff.

Namazu

Naval/Merchant Marine Interest Piracy

GOT PIRATES?

Every now and then we like to restate our editorial policy about piracy, both as a news subject and a modern day matter for voyage planning. We particularly wish to draw the attention of our professional mariner readers to the voyage planning tools we offer for piracy. Other than that, our personal view of piracy is simple. The only "good pirate" is not walking around above ground.

The indicators are really a mixed bag in the recent news. This is why we carry the Pirate Daily Update in our News Section. We almost hesitate to put any pirate news into our daily blog postings. We are thinking of pretty much ignoring specific pirate headlines in our News Section Headline Service. It is getting to be just too routine and after all it is in our Pirate Activity Daily Report at the top of the Headline Service.  More problematic is the conflict in piracy reporting. Within the last month we have carried links to analytical articles by different "experts" who maintain that the piracy problem is slackening. We almost linked one today via "News Flash ALERT" here on the station identification, but that seemed confusing in light of the fact that within the hour, two more major pirate attacks were reported in the world's media.

Pirates seem to amuse and interest the general media, but the conventional non maritime media seems pretty clueless when it comes to analyzing what's going on and what's important to shipping professionals. We think the time has come for us to stop reacting to media piracy reports and state our position on piracy and what commercial maritime professionals should do about it. Our opinion on what naval professionals should do about piracy is simple and politically incorrect. That's why no government is going to follow our advice and the piracy problem will continue indefinitely. Our advice to commercial mariners and yachtsmen is more detailed and may be followed without asking anyone "may I", unless you decide to carry fire arms.

Here is our editorial policy on pirate stories and our advice on piracy to commercial and recreational deep sea mariners.

Editorial Policy: Piracy is real and all too uncommon. Few individual instances are all that news worthy. We will continue to link to the daily piracy update, but we will break into the blog postings with individual pirate incident reports only when the attack is indicative of new and novel activity and areas. We will focus on developing more useful links for incorporating piracy security into your voyage planning in our News Service and Navigation pages.

ADVICE TO MARINERS:
  • Piracy is real, violent, and growing globally even if some former "hot spots" seem to have entered a quiet period. Anti Piracy security measures should be a routine part of STCW mandated voyage planning.
  • The first step in such voyage planning is to determine your level of risk at each point in the voyage. While piracy can and does happen anywhere, our daily up date and other official and unofficial services can give you an excellent idea of whether or not your voyage track takes you across any area of heightened risk.
  • If you will cross an area of hightened risk it is time to consult with the ship owner, insurance interests, and legal counsel about whether or not to arm any part of the ship's company, or hire armed security at particular points in the voyage.
  • Whether or not you have armed security the next step is to plan heightened security and repulsion measures for the threatened parts of your passage. You need to know if there is any naval protection available in the area you are concerned with and how to communicate with these services.
The bottom line ladies and gentlemen is that if you are not including serious piracy preventative security measures and repulsion measure in your voyage planning, you are not doing a professional job of voyage planning.

For our part we will seek additional piracy information links for you for inclusion in our News Section and in the Navigation  Section to use as voyage planning tools. As much as we have found that pirate stories increase our general traffic in the blog postings, we are not serving our professional mariner visitors by devoting so much ink to pirate activities in the blogsphere. We hate it when we find ourselves acting like the general media. It's not that we are incapable of pandering, its just that when we catch ourselves we don't want it to be business as usual.

Egypt-Chinese Agreement Signed. Work To  Start Soon On Northwest Suez Development

Planet Waves

Perspective of Suez Canal, from Tour Egypt website.

SOURCE: Egypt State Information Service
DATE RECEIVED: Saturday, April 27, 2013
'An Egyptian-Chinese agreement to overhaul the northwest area of the Gulf of Suez will be the real starting point for the whole area's development and part of Egypt's dream to materialize the Suez Canal Corridor, Prime Minister Hisham Qandil said.
During the signing of the agreement Saturday 27/04/2013, Qandil added the Egyptian government, since taking office, has been working on the Suez Canal Corridor Development Project to transform it from just a waterway to a mega national project.
An integrated development plan has been outlined for the whole area, Qandil said, adding the agreement will offer hundreds of thousands of direct job opportunities and millions of indirect ones.
The first phase will provide nearly 700,000 jobs and billions of pounds that would benefit the Egyptian treasury, he said.
The foundation stone of some small and medium sized projects for the youth were laid down to achieve social justice, Qandil noted."

Editor's Note: 1/3/2014 The agreement described here is still in effect as far as we are able to ascertain, but since the Spring of 2013 the canal has been subjected to both labor unrest and terrorist targeting. The net result of course is the natural slowing of all sorts of economic development. Egypt's on going disruptions caused by the Muslim Brotherhood continue to retard Egypt's overall economic progress. This is a problem with all Middle Eastern investments. Islamism plays off of the hopes of the economically disadvantaged but in fact offers nothing but the economy of a locus swarm. When a population gives into Islamism there is a frenzy of blood letting of their former "oppressors", a destruction of the infrastructure, and an even more depressing economy emerges but then is held in place by unremitting terror and the locus horde that is Islamism seeks out new productive fields to destroy. We couldn't recommend to Western interests to join Chinese investors in Suez Canal Corridor project. The locus horde will eventually turn on the Chinese just as they did on the West claiming that their "patrimony has been stolen".  Then they will destroy the investments of these outside interests but are incapable of replacing it with anything. Islam is about conquest, submission, and iron rule by force not running an economy, building, or encouraging human endeavor. It has been dominant in the Middle East for 1400 years and that is why the region is an economic one trick pony based on oil. Before that it was spices and in between it was simply piracy. We urge any Westerners considering investing in anything in the Middle East to read Winston Churchill on Islam.

4/27/2013 Boat Building and Model Making

THANK YOU BOAT AND BOAT MODEL BUILDERS

THANK YOU BOAT BUILDERS!

In reviewing our recent stats we have found that our two most frequented sections are BOAT BUILDING and ADMIRALTY LAW.

BOAT BUILDING one of our more recently added and under built sections actually pulled in more visitors than the runner up ADMIRALTY LAW. Thank you maritime lawyers and paralegals! We do have much greater plans for the Admiralty Law section for the future. And you may have noticed that we have several interactive research assistance features, and a collection of organized hyperlinks to relevant research tools and sites in admiralty law.  The related special interest page AUTHORITATIVE literature already has volume one of the American Admiralty Bureau's COMMENTATORS posted so that you may read it on line for free.

By comparison the BOAT BUILDING section was, before very recently, almost an "empty room in the library".

Small Model Ship
"POND YACHT" PHOTO BY JIRI HODAN

Yet the boat builder visitors came in strength. Thank you boat builders. We have recently added some new books and videos in BOAT BUILDING section. Our illustration by photographer Jiri Hodan above is of a model boat or "Pond Yacht" alerting you to one of the newer features that we are constructing for you on model boat building. Because you have clicked on "BOAT BUILDING" enough to make it the most visited of our "sections" ("special pages" in bloggereese) we have committed to a rapid expansion of quality content. We know we spend a lot of time in our blog postings on subjects of interest to naval professionals, and commercial mariners, but we treasure every visitor and now especially our professional and amateur boat builders.
Afinia 3D Printer H-Series
ONE OF SEVERAL 3D PRINTERS AVAILABLE THROUGH OUR ON LINE SHOP IN THE BOAT BUILDING SECTION

We have now added to the boat building section an on line tool shop. One mind blowing piece of equipment that you can find there is a 3 D printer, think the replicator on STAR TREK. These 3 D printers aren't cheap but for the very serious model builder prices under $2,000 mean that those of us who make less than Jay Leno could have one in the garage.

Without a sufficient number of visitors, as Surfing Muse (SM, our  youngest and least disciplined staffer) is wont to say, "we would have to go out and get real jobs".  We gave Surfing Muse an on line shop too.  If you happen to surf between boat or model building visit Surfing Muse's Surf Shop at the very end of the scroll in the SURFING section. Your on line purchases help keep Surfing Muse off the streets , and trust us; you don't want this kid on the streets.

THANK YOU AND PLEASE DROP IN OFTEN AT THE BOAT BUILDING  PAGE WE ARE WORKING CONSTANTLY AT EXPANSION AND IMPROVEMENT.

SURFING MUSE IS ON THE LOOSE IN CYBER SPACE

PSSSSSSSSSSSST! Hey Dudes !  SM (Surfing Muse) here! I finally got hold of the "dashboard", Johnas and Og really don't understand "Shareware", or like computers generally. Listen, Dudes this site has SECTIONS whether its being blogged to nirvana or not; what am I chopped liver? You guys have got to click on the SURFING tab with regularity or I'm gonna be forced to get a real job! Man we have real stuff over there in the surfing section but my shop ain't even third dude! Don't leave me hanging here, click on SURFING in the right hand column. Gotta split, Og and Johnas don't like for me to touch the dashboard, but they won't know till almost noon on Saturday, later if the Fleet Reserve stays open past midnight.
