L.FRANCIS HERRESHOFF DINGY AND YACHT TENDER DESIGNS

L. FRANCIS HERRESHOFF 'S CLASSIC SMALL CRAFT DESIGNS updated 12/18/2015
We Correct Another Key Word Search Deficiency

American Admiralty Books Safety & Privacy Policies   Capt. L. Francis Herreshoff was a yacht and small craft designer who lived between 1890 and 1972 and whose designs are popular around the world. Since his death some of his designs have been modified for production in fiberglass or adapted with modifications by other designers to incorporate some modern features. His smaller craft are still very popular with the amatuer boat builders. Many of our regular readers are amatuer boat and boat model builders and many more start research here.

We were very disappointed to note a recent visitor who entered on the key word search "L.Francis Herreshoff dingy design". The google search engine directed the researcher to our site by apparently while we make mention of the books by Herreshoff at different places within the blog our visitor did not find the type of comprehensive information that was needed. We were mortified because Herreshoff is the major name in American yacht design and we want to be the place to start any type of maritime research. So we are herewith beefing up and centralizing our information of Capt. Herreshoff, his father "Capt.Nat", his brother Sidney, his uncle JB, and the Herreshoff  Manufacturing Company;  Books, links, etc.., every thing that we have on Herreshoff and his works will be condensed in this post and the post permanently installed in our BOAT BUILDING SECTION.

L. Francis Herreshoff wrote the following books, some of which contain simple study plans and drawings of his designs. The Common Sense of Yacht DesignThe Compleat Cruiser, Sensible Cruising Designs . He also published many "how to Build articles in Rudder Magazine. The following titles are about L. Francis Herreshoff or compile certain of his writings:  The Writings of L. Francis Herreshoff An L. Francis Herreshoff Reader. The Mystic Seaport Index to Rudder Magazine indicates that between October 1914 and March 1953  RUDDER published 9 designs by the Herreshoff manufacturing company ranging in size from 128 ' to 12.5 '.

The Herreshoff Manufacturing company was founded by two brothers , one was  Nathanael G. Herreshoff known as "Captain Nat" and the father of L.Frances. There is at least one book on the extraordinary and somewhat tragic life of "Captain Nat":  Capt. Nat Herreshoff: The Wizard of Bristol,: Capt.Nat is sometimes confused with his son L. Francis and like L. Francis was a naval architect and boat designer. However he started out designing commercial steam vessels but lost his steam engineer's license as a result of an accident during a sea trial of one of his designs where he served aboard as engineer . The boiler blew and one crewman was killed. Afterward "Capt. Nat' did turn quite a bit to yacht designs and some of his are considered classics that people still like to build and designers like to study, but many people are unaware that "Captain Nat" isn't L. Francis. Capt. Nat died in the 1930s and L. Francis was still designing in the 1950s so for two decades there was only L. Francis sharing the spot light with his far lesser known half or step brother A Sidney Dewolf Herreshofff  , which probably partially explains the confusion. "Capt. Nat" is credited with revolutionizing yacht design and designed several successful America's Cup defenders.

American Admiralty Books Safety & Privacy Policies    As mentioned, L. Francis also had either a half brother or step brother who was an accomplished yacht designer A Sidney Dewolf Herreshoff. A list of his designs may be found here:Designs of A Sidney Dewolf Herreshoff  Anyone visiting the site may notice that the site credits Sidney with the design of the GEMINI, a sailboat design often credited to L. Francis. In fact we couldn't tell you which of the two actually is responsible for the GENINI. But Francis was the only one who was a prolific book and periodical article author. That is how he emerged in the public perception as the Herreshoff of the "Hereshoff designs" and the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company.

John Brown Herreshoff or "JB" was the business brain behind Herreshoff Manufacturing and the brother of Capt. Nat.  JB was blind and so never developed as a designer but was a master of deal making, and could cost estimate each design in his head. It was JB who found the initial investors, the initial buyers, and managed the work force and other overhead, keeping the company in the black. He led the company from its start up with 20 employees to a long lasting status as a 400 employee company operating consistently in the black. J B Herreshoff created the sound business environment and regular cash flow that allowed the designers to flourish.   Without JB, there would have been no famous "Herreshoff designs" and all three brilliant Herreshoff boat designers would have spent their lives laboring in anonymity for various boat builders over their life times with the business owner's name associated with the designs.

THE MARINER AND THE TAR BABY, FINAL CHAPTER

IN OUR LAST INSTALLMENT ON THE ENCOUNTER BETWEEN THE MARINER AND THE CREDENTIAL EATING TAR BABY WE THOUGHT THAT THIS WOULD BE AN ENDLESS SERIAL.  THINGS CHANGE

Brer Rabbit and the Tar-Baby Illustration by AB Frost 1895 (PD-Old-100)

We were already aware of all of the maneuvering that our mariner Brer Rabbit had generated after he realized just how negligent the NMC could be with his occupational credential, without which he couldn't work in his skilled and remunerative occupation of ship's engineering watch stander. With what we knew we fully expected that it would be at least two more weeks before he would hear from the Coast Guard's National Maritime Center (NMC). He had already been forced to endure unnecessary weeks in a hotel near his union hall, an expense that ran into thousands of dollars while waiting on a process that used to take a few hours at the local USCG Office of the "Officer in Charge of Marine Inspection, and later at the USCG Regional Exam Centers. But since the powers that decide the fate of America's civilian mariners decided in their infinite military wisdom that centralizing everything in one place at one end of the nation would best serve their purposes the process is now of indefinite duration. Thus the related expenses are unpredictable. Unfortunately these occupational credentials must be renewed every 5 years. While in the indefinite renewal process mariners can't ship out, can't work, can't earn a pay check. At exactly that moment in time mariners must also pay fees to the Coast Guard for the privilege of renewing their credentials. Not counting payments for periodic retraining requirements, and fees for physicals, the Coast Guard fee of about $85 seems to be the only expense the Coast Guard is willing to acknowledge that it imposes on the mariner. In fact the cost of renewing Coast Guard occupational credentials can often run into thousands of dollars.

We knew that after the exchange of correspondence that we reprinted for you in redacted form our mariner knew that his pleas for expeditious handling  were falling on deaf ears as his associated expenses were mounting. We were well aware that he was in the process of enlisting the aid of a sympathetic member of Congress. We fully expected to describe for you in these pages the arguments back and forth between the Congressional member and the  NMC for at least two weeks. Then the unexpected happened, in the words of Brer Mariner the NMC "finally pushed the send button" and the Tar baby coughed up the mariner's credential. As we write this our mariner is clutching his occupational credential and limping down to the union hall hoping to sign 0n  to a long and arduous voyage, the kind that pays enough to leave him some living expenses after paying the thousands of dollars in expenses associated with the trauma of occupational license renewal with the USCG. This will be his last stint in the merchant marine, he does not plan to go through the trauma of occupational license renewal with the USCG again. There is a reason why the U.S. Merchant Marine is disappearing and contrary to the official government explanation it isn't really caused by "exorbitant seamen's wages". So we will spare you all of the additional details and we'll just file the data against the day that someone in government actually decides to exercise real oversight on the Coast Guard's performance of its merchant marine personnel regulatory functions.

THE USS DONALD COOK  (DDG-75) is an Arleigh Burke class guided missile destroyer

"A U.S. warship is readying to depart for Spain on Friday in accordance with NATO plans to strengthen ballistic-missile defenses in Europe.
The USS Donald Cook will travel to its new home port of Rota, Spain, as part of the Obama administration's "phased adaptive approach" for European missile defense. Three other Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers are to be deployed to Rota within the next two years, the Pentagon said in a press release.
"The U.S. has a historically strong partnership with Spain, and the strength of that relationship is exemplified today as the first of four U.S. Navy destroyers departs for Rota, Spain," Navy Secretary Ray Mabus said in provided comments.  "Permanently forward-deploying four ships in Rota will enable us to be in the right place, not just at the right time, but all the time."
"The other three destroyers tasked for fielding in Spain are the USS RossUSS Porter and USS Carney. All of the ships are to be equipped with Aegis systems and Standard Missile 3 Block 1B interceptors designed to defeat short- and medium-range ballistic missile threats." NAVAL INTERESTS: CAMEROON NAVY EXPANDS BY TWO PATROL BOATS

CAMEROON NAVY INCREASING CAPABILITIES:

Spanish Shipbuilder Delivers Three Craft to Cameroon Navy

According to a story carried in MARINE AND ENGINEERING LOG's  MARINE LINK.COM, Marine and Engineering Log's on line magazine Cameroon is poised to accept delivery of two new patrol boats from Spanish builder Grup Aresa.  Grup Aresa has worked extensively with the Cameroon Navy previously and at present the Navy has at least 12 Grup Aresa vessels in commission. You can click on the Grup Aresa link for a video which depicts the several types of vessels that have been delivered to the Cameroon Navy. Above is an image of the type being delivered at present. According to the Grup Aresa web site:

"The Spanish shipbuilding group has worked extensively with Cameroon, supplying a sizeable number of vessels to its Navy, which has 12 Aresa boats in service. This figure includes six Aresa 750 Commandos RIBs – delivered last August -, five 1200 Stealth RIBs and one 1200 Defcon RIB – delivered in May 2013. Further deliveries will take place in February when two 32-meter patrol boats will be delivered."

More details are available on both the Grup Aresa.site and at Maine Link.Com.  Both sites have additional photographs and the Grup Aresa site has a video. Our congratulations to the Cameroon Navy on their new acquisitions. This is another sign of progress towards Cameroon fully developing the ability to protect the sovereignty of her territorial waters and enforce her customs zones and exclusive economic zones 24 /7. Yesterday we carried news of Kenya's decision to create a coast guard. Cameroon is across the continent on the Atlantic side of Africa and its increasingly competent naval forces are becoming a force for law and order.

Cameroon's larger neighbor Nigeria has a much larger navy and coast guard and within their navy they have a Special Boat Unit capable of many tasks associated with SEAL and Marine Corps type missions.  There have been some outbreaks of piracy off of Nigeria but these have been rather quickly handled by the Nigerian Navy / Coast Guard. Piracy has increased by one third off of the Ivory Coast which has bitten the financial bullet to purchase 40 new vessels to update its naval forces. We do not expect the problems off of the Ivory Coast to reach the proportion of the Somali problem. We rather expect that the regional African powers are on top of the problem and NATO / EU/ US international task forces will probably not be needed as they have been off of Somalia. This is great news for every nation in  Sub-Saharan Africa. Nations willing to invest in right sized properly equipped, competent naval forces will bring the wealth of the African outer continental shelf into the public coffers, and help keep the peace moving it from the fragile nature of the not so distant past, to a truly robust state.

NIGERIA AND GHANA NAVAL COOPERATION BAGS SOME BAD GUYS

NIGERIAN AND GHANA NAVAL FORCES TRACK DOWN AND RETAKE A HIJACKED GREEK MERCHANT SHIP

THE NIGERIAN BULLETIN Published the story:

"The Nigerian Navy, according to a statement issued on Friday in Abuja and signed by the Director of Naval Information, Kabir Aliyu, has intercepted a Greek-owned merchant tanker, MT KERALA, believed to have been hijacked off the coast of Luanda after a four-days search in the Gulf of Guinea using the Nigerian Navy remote surveillance system, and search patrols.

It further stated that MT KERALA was currently under Ghanaian custody in the Port of Tema and Interpol operatives were investigating the circumstances of the hijack of the ship.

The statement said that on January 23, the Navy received a report from the International Maritime Bureau, IMB, that MT KERALA had been hijacked off Luanda in Angola.

“Subsequent report from IMB on January 25 located her about 50nm South West of Pennington Oil Terminal in Nigeria. In a swift response, three patrol vessels were deployed to search for MT KERALA. Two other vessels, MT ITRI and a tug boat GARE were reportedly in the vicinity of MT KERALA conducting ship-to-ship transfer of products with KERALA in gross violation of existing regulations in Nigeria,” the statement said." Read the rest of the story at: THE NIGERIAN BULLETIN

Editors note: We love news of victories by local constabulary navies and coast guard forces. Every day these emerging small navies and coast guards are proving increasingly capable of keeping the peace in their immediate ocean neighborhoods. The ocean world is changing. Just because a major power's navy isn't on scene no longer means that any particular stretch of ocean is open to criminal or thug state activity. Adjacent coastal states, even those with struggling economies are investing the treasure, and human effort to develop competent naval forces.

U.S.NAVY SHIPS HEADING TO THE BLACK SEA AS BACK UP TO RUSSIAN WINTER OLYMPIC SECURITY

THE U.S. AND RUSSIAN MILITARY ARE COOPERATING ON SEVERAL LEVELS RELATIVE TO THE TERRORIST THREATS AGAINST THE RUSSIAN HOSTED WINTER OLYMPICS.

Russia however has made no specific requests for naval assistance. The U.S. is basically sending air capable ships with the ability to land helicopters to stand by at sea within range of the Olympic village in the event any portion has to be evacuated due to a terrorist threat. This gives Russian authorities additional choices and resources that would not be available otherwise and of course a preferred destination if the U.S. team has to be evacuated. In addition to the USS MOUNT WHITNEY the USS TAYLOR a frigate departed an Italian port to joint in the effort in the Black Sea.

CALIBRATING A RADAR

Comics Magazine, The

We have a single funny video for you. You may recall from reading our introduction to the crew post a while back that "Capn Ben" who tends our Oceanography and Navigation pages and put together some of our navigational special features and also filmed our introductory video actualy still spends most of his professional time at sea. What follows is an actual video clip of part of the process of calibrating the radar set. That may not sound funny....but watch: Calibrating the Radar
