U.S.NAVY SHIPS HEADING TO THE BLACK SEA AS BACK UP TO RUSSIAN WINTER OLYMPIC SECURITY

THE U.S. AND RUSSIAN MILITARY ARE COOPERATING ON SEVERAL LEVELS RELATIVE TO THE TERRORIST THREATS AGAINST THE RUSSIAN HOSTED WINTER OLYMPICS.

Russia however has made no specific requests for naval assistance. The U.S. is basically sending air capable ships with the ability to land helicopters to stand by at sea within range of the Olympic village in the event any portion has to be evacuated due to a terrorist threat. This gives Russian authorities additional choices and resources that would not be available otherwise and of course a preferred destination if the U.S. team has to be evacuated. In addition to the USS MOUNT WHITNEY the USS TAYLOR a frigate departed an Italian port to joint in the effort in the Black Sea.
