Unprecedented Tokyo trial starts

Somali pair admit trying to hijack ship

Two pirates captured by U.S. forces and turned over to the Japanese Coast Guard started their trials in Tokyo today. The turn over was to Japanese authorities because the assault was against a Japanese owned ship, though it was registered under a flag of convenience. New Japanese anti piracy laws allow for such prosecutions and U.S. authorities much prefer prosecution to the more usual "catch and release. If convicted the Somali men face sentences of five years to life.

IN THE BLOG POSTS TODAY

Today we post the second of a series of semi annual reports on the economic health of the American Merchant Marine. We usually divide the report into two sections one for the domestic Jones Act service, and one for the international service. However this year's drought conditions in the Mississippi Valley so negatively impacted the towboat and barge industry that we have made that segment of the Jones Act trades the subject of a separate report which we posted yesterday. Today we post our analysis on the economic performance of the rest of The Jones Act Fleet. Still ahead as the year progresses are our reports on the deep draft or international fleet, and possibly a report on the commercial fishing industry.  Previous reports from 2012 are posted in our News section.

Also Today, Namazu picks a Golden oldie

On Sunday we restored the daily station identifications from last week. This splits last week's blog postings into smaller segments divided by the daily station IDs and Notices from the days the postings actually appeared.  So if you are scrolling down to find the latest from Namazu, or our post about our daily piracy updates, or latest assessment on Chinese maritime aggression, or our amazement over the discovery of a Somali pirate retirement program you'll encounter more of our green sails heralding previews of the day but also some news and comment that doesn't appear anywhere else.  We like to save these Notice Boards and in the order that they first appeared in. Following Sunday's Station Identification and Notice Board which appears below today's posts you will find last week's posts on piracy, Chinese maritime aggression, and the latest from Namazu. To your right are the list and links to our special interest sections such as ADMIRALTY LAW, AUTHORITATIVE LITERATURE NAVAL INTEREST,  MERCHANT MARINE INTEREST,  OCEANOGRAPHY,  DIVING, SURFING, SAILING,  BOAT BUILDING ETC.  As this new week progresses we may temporarily take down some daily station IDs and Notice Boards to facilitate scrolling to the week's blog postings of interest. We tend to draw attention to items of high interest from the previous day in the daily Notice Board.
