MARITIME LITERATURE: Tales of the Sea of Cosmic Consequence

SEASCAPE-STORM 1866-7 by Claude Monet

You don't have to be a maritime professional or recerational boater, boat builder, diver, or surfer to enjoy MOBY DICK, or CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS. Many of the great works of literature are stories of the sea. Some are classics, some are known for their gritty realism and may be judged classics at some future point, THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER comes to mind. Everyone reads these sorts of books, we review, comment, recommend, and facilitate your acquisition whether you buy a library bound volume, commercial paper back, Kindle, or get a library loan.  `The Maritime Literature "SPECIAL PAGE" is for everyone. But have you ever considered...........

Sailors are avid readers, books are simply user friendly, no batteries or head sets required, no flickering screens or noise to disturb your ship mates. More over reading is essential to a modern sailor's career these days when a naval career means a commitment to career long continuing education. You would be surprised at what sailors are reading in terms of non fiction. To get a feel for sailor tastes in non fiction check out a small portion of  the suggested reading list of the Chief of Naval Operations reprinted from our "NAVAL INTEREST SECTION below:

All Quiet on the Western FrontErich M. Remarque
American Caesar: Douglas MacArthur, 1880-1964William Manchester
Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black HolesStephen M. Hawking
Command of the Seas: A Personal StoryJohn F. Lehman
Everything We Had: An Oral History of the Vietnam War by Thirty Three American Soldiers Who Fought ItAl Santoli, Ed.
Flight of the IntruderStephen Coontz
Hunt for Red OctoberTom Clancy
In Love and War: The Story of a Family's Ordeal and Sacrifice During the Vietnam YearsJames B. & Sybil Stockdale
In Search of Excellence: Lessons from America's Best-Run CompaniesThomas J. Peters
On WatchElmo Zumwalt
Red Badge of CourageStephen Crane
Red Storm RisingTom Clancy
Run Silent, Run DeepEdward L. Beach
The Caine MutinyHerman Wouk
The Cruel SeaNicholas Monsarrat
The Killer AngelsMichael Shaara

As you can see sailors are reading a lot more interesting stuff than just ordinance and gunnery manuals. No where else in the pages of American Admiralty Books would you be likely to find A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME, or THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE. Obviously the Chief of Naval Operations feels these works impart values to his sailors that don't require a nautical setting. But these classics are not the only popular  reading that you might find in the NAVAL INTEREST SECTION.Some recent offerings include.

Project Azorian:

Nonfiction that is stranger than fiction, this is the story of the CIA and the secretive raising of the wrecked soviet nuclear submarine K-129.  Project Azorian was a U.S. Central Intelligence Agency operation to recover the sunken Soviet submarine K-129 from the Pacific Ocean floor in 1974. The cover was ocean bottom mining exploration. The CIA  used the purpose-built ship Hughes Glomar Explorer which in fact was built for the Azorian operation, but has since been used subsequently for actual deep sea floor mineral exploration.  .The K-129  sank approximately 1,600 miles northwest of Hawaii  in the 1960s.

Its been a real busy and news worthy summer and we did a lot of experimenting in our blog space. Some postings brought us some new visitors. But the real work and value of the American Admiralty Books project is in the SPECIAL PAGES where we knuckle down to the hard work of sifting through the World's English language maritime information, review, sort, organize, critique, recommend, link. English is the international official language of maritime navigation, so there is a lot available in English. We have a lot of work ahead of us and some times these pages are in a bit of a mess just as you might expect in a library or book store that just received a truck load of volumes. But come on in, browse try some places that you wouldn't normally expect to find something of personal interest in. You don't have to purchase anything. Don't be intimidated by the titles of the SPECIAL PAGES this is supposed to be a fun place to roam about. Try some of the special features in sections like Oceanography. You don't have to be an Oceanographer to listen to the DEEP:   listentothedeep.com

Come on, live a little explore the SPECIAL PAGES!
