Looking Towards Dock Street From Ego Alley

TODAY IS TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 25, 2012

Annapolis is getting ready for the October Boat Shows. Annapolis like another state capital we recently visited, Montgomery Alabama was once a thriving commercial port. It's original main harbor pictured above known alternatively as "City Dock" and "Ego Alley" is admittedly too shallow and small for today's commercial ships. Over the centuries that Annapolis has existed The City Dock /Ego Alley waterway  and adjacent waterways have evolved from a commercial general cargo harbor in colonial days to a commercial fishing harbor in the first half of the Twentieth Century, to one of the leading yacht harbors of the World today. Annapolis never gave up on navigation related industries but it has missed some opportunities. We will be exploring some of the navigational history and unexploited navigational potential of Annapolis in our blog posts over the next few days.
Don't forget to join us here October 5 -8, 2012 for our own on line boat show right here in cyber space.

NEWS SERVICE ALERT: We are having technical difficulties with the NEWS SERVICE. The most obvious to our readers is that the link to the NEWS SERVICE has dropped out of alphabetical order on the right of this page and now appears at the bottom of the list. The page is slow taking input and we are behind on postings. We are working on it, please bear with us for a while.

NEWS FLASH: AT FIRST THE THOUGHT OF A WATER CANNON FIGHT BETWEEN TWO COAST GUARDS MIGHT SEEM FUNNY BUT THIS IS VERY BAD NEWS.

Japanese and Taiwanese ships in water cannon battle over Senkaku Islands dispute:

The Link above takes you to the full story of this morning's water cannon clash, first between Japanese Coast Guard ships and Taiwan fishing boats which actually came inside Japanese territorial waters with the blessing of a Taiwan "Surveillance ship" (Coast Guard like service)that accompanied them to the line of demarcation between Japanese territorial waters and international waters. When the fishing vessels refused to leave the Japanese Coast Guard opened up on them with water cannon. As soon as Japan started hosing the intruding fishing boats the Taiwan Cutter immediately entered Japan's territorial waters and deployed water cannon on the Japanese Coast Guard. While the two Coast Guard vessels were exchanging high pressure water streams the fishing boats left Japan's territorial waters and then the Taiwan cutter broke contact and left the scene. This may be a non lethal incident but technically Taiwan invaded Japan and two government vessels came to blows. Taiwan claims the SENKAKU Islands, as does Mainland China which also claims Taiwan.  China's move last week seemed to drive the dispute to the edge of shooting, this incident by Taiwan, in the end, actually led to blows being exchange between two ships of each government. Japan is in possession of recognized international instruments that indicate that Japan is the rightful sovereign over these islands. China and Taiwan both claim a legitimate right to the islands. China and Taiwan have their own dispute over the sovereignty of Taiwan itself. Neither China nor Taiwan has acted reasonably or with any sense of responsibility in this matter. All three nations are joined at the hip economically and can not afford to be at war with each other. Japan can't possibly relinquish its claim to either party without being accused of irresponsibly damaging the interests of the other. Japan seems more than willing to talk if it is done in an international forum and without a gun to her head. China refuses to acknowledge that any one else besides itself and Japan have dogs in the race. Taiwan, in no position to take on either China or Japan blatantly challenges both. Clearly the only real adults in this situation are the Japanese who have the best legal case and have demonstrated remarkable constraint in the midst of horrendous provocation.
