NEWS FLASH! 36 minutes ago  (posted 0922 CST) our sources inform us that the Japanese Daily Press reported that 11 Chinese government ships (most likely the Ocean Surveillance Service (Coast Guard) have entered waters of Japan's "Contiguous Zone" an area just outside Japanese territorial waters where nations have special law enforcement rights dependent on "probable cause" but considered not territorial waters . Japanese Coast Guard vessels inside their territorial waters have contacted these Chinese ships and the initial encounter is not good. The Chinese reassert their claim to the islands and maintain that they are there to enforce Chinese law. There is a flotilla of 1,000 Chinese fishing vessels coming behind this OSS vanguard. The encounter is off to a disastrous start. The Chinese Coast Guard has made a terrible opening move.

UPDATE: (0952 CST)Article in English found:  Here is the link if you wish to follow events via their English language version as they post them:

OBSERVATION: Let's  hope there is some inaccuracy in this report because it mentions the presence of two Chinese Naval Vessels in the area. That would signal a far more aggressive intent than OSS vessels alone. China seems to be trying to manufacture an excuse for war. According to the article the JSDF is on alert but not proceeding to the scene yet.

OPINION: The United States Navy Pacific Fleet should be placed on alert to signal to China that we intend to honor our defense commitment to Japan. Japan based U.S. units should be ready to sail with the JMSDF  (Japanese Maritime Self defense Force) if they are dispatched to scene. China in its handling of the China Sea EEZ/Island disputes has shown itself to not only be a thug state, but an inept and irresponsible naval force. Time to demonstrate our willingness to  sink the swimming dragon. The Communist Party Central should be able to figure out that if we send the Dragon to the bottom, their thug government and supposedly "vibrant economy" will go down right behind them. At the opening shot we should cancel our debt to them, poof! there goes their economy. Of course since we borrow 50 cents of every dollar we spend we'd have to learn to balance the budget or find other creditors now becasue China buys a lot of that debt.

This morning's postings address maritime territorial disputes, one about to come to crisis off Japan. Never has the world had more riding on the decisions of the Coast Guard Officers of two opposing nations.

The other posting is about an older but seemingly never ending dispute in the South Atlantic.
