China Rejects U.N. Arbitration of Maritime Dispute
WILL THE DRAGON LITIGATE? ONLY PER ITS OWN PLAN
BEIJING (AP) — China said Tuesday it has rejected the Philippines' attempt to seek international arbitration over conflicting claims to territory in the South China Sea.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said that China's ambassador to Manila, Ma Keqing, had returned Manila's formal notification of the move to a Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs official. Hong said the proposal was historically and legally incorrect and contained unacceptable accusations against China.
The Philippines informed China last month of its plans to take the countries' conflicting claims to a tribunal operating under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. It wants the panel to declare Beijing's moves in the potentially oil-rich waters unlawful

EDITOR'S NOTE: China's Refusal to submit to binding arbitration in the case of the Philippines makes
sense from China's view point. China's weakest claims are against the Philippines. The Chinese claims
against Philippine Territory have no basis in history or law. Chinese activity in the area has been boldly
and nakedly aggressive. The so called "disputed territory" is very close to the Philippines and hundreds
of miles from mainland China. If China submitted to the Philippine's request for arbitration by the U.N
China knows it would receive not only a judgement against its position but probably also an admonition
against its aggressive and thug like behavior. So in keeping the precepts of masters of deceit China
feigns offense at the request and refuses to present its non existent case. The bottom line is that
China itself has filed suite and actually has some legitimate cases in one or two instances and
a fighting chance in court on a couple of others. China intends to get its wins in court first then waiving
a decision or two by an international tribunal that upholds China's right to an individual island or two
the Dragon then will proceed with devouring the watery territory of its neighbors.
