UNLOCKING THE MARITIME WORLD: Our mission is literally to  unlock the maritime world by making all English language data readily locatable, available, evaluated when possible, and affordable. We suggest checking our subject pages first by clicking on the subject section most like your particular interest to your right. These pages will bring you to free links, free videos, book reviews and book lists on the subjects. If that doesn't answer your question come back here and click on "The Mother of All Maritime Links": http://www.boat-links.com/boatlink.html#top Or look for it within the special interest section

We may never complete our goal of reviewing and evaluating all books in print on maritime subjects. We urge you to read those we have reviewed but if you don't find what you need click into the Amazon general search engine via the link below. Every day we try to make it easier for you to discover what you need in our pages but until we have finished construction these two links assure you a "portal into the maritime world."

COMMENT/OBSERVATION: Some of you may recall our serial postings under the title SPACE AS AN OCEAN which is now in dry dock in our maritime literature section as an E-book in progress with the working title of PROTOCOLS. We recently became aware of a new study widely circulated, and frankly grossly over hyped in the general media, that seemed to change the facts around which we calculated the probability of other industrial and space faring societies in the Galaxy. We addressed that issue in a post in the SPACE AS AN OCEAN serial titled YODA WHERE ARE YOU. We carefully examined the new statistical analysis carried out in relation to earth sized planets orbiting Red Dwarf stars. Despite the media proclamations ( not the actual scientific claims of the working astronomers and astrophysicists involved in the Red Dwarf study) we don't see the statistical projection of "Earth Like" planets increasing dramatically unless you limit "Earth Like" to similarities in size and distance from their orbited star. We have edited our original post to consider the effects of the Red Dwarf Study and will republish it tomorrow as a post. The E-book when published will reflect this change as well.

Also of recent interest in terms of the intersection between maritime and space interest we noted the speakers roster for an upcoming Washington Conference. Satellite 2013,The Maritime Satcom Forum is scheduled for the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC for March 18, 2013 . We found it interesting that speakers included major executives of space based industries and organisations such as Thuraya Telecommunications and Inmarsat. Most interesting is the presenter of the keynote address, non spaceman, Captain Kuba Szymanski, Secretary General , International Ship Manager Association. In a preview of the address the advertising flyer notes:" Ship's captains in the 21st Century are simultaneously expert commanders of  seafaring crews business managers running remote business premises, and as such they require access to a range of mission critical communications solutions, based on satellite".

The maritime world has looked to space for solutions since the age of the European Recognizance when celestial navigation was perfected. While once mariners relied on natural celestial bodies to navigate, today they rely on man made satellites for both navigation and communications. Mariners play a part in both space launch and space vehicle recovery activities. The maritime world continues to be joined at the hip with the space and aviation industries. We will continue to address these relationships in the blog space but also in the Special Interest Sections including Maritime literature where our SPACE AS AN OCEAN is presently available to read while undergoing editorial change for E-book publication, Naval Interests, and Merchant Marine Interest Sections. Until we can collect enough material and space to display it we will continue to archive such material in the closest relevant special interest sections, but starting to day we will build an index to them in our Finding Aid and Index Section.
