2/4/2013 USS GUARDIAN CONTINUING COVERAGE (2)

USS GUARDIAN CONTINUING COVERAGE:

File Waves Break Over USS Guardian: Photo credit USN
USS GUARDIAN STILL AGROUND AND BEING BATTERED BY SEAS, U.S. Navy Photo.

The USS GUARDIAN is still aground in worsening weather but remains intact. The Fuel, lubricants, hazardous materials have all been removed and salt water pumped into the fuel tanks to ballast the ship. When weather permits, the salvage crews are working to remove the crew's personal effects and anything of value that may be removed. Only one of the two crane vessels needed for her break up and removal in pieces is near the scene. Even if both crane vessels were available there would be a delay for weather today. The optimistic assessment is one month from today to complete the operation. As previously reported the United States has agreed to a $100,000 initial payment for damages to the coral. More is expected to be demanded. We have not found a news release newer than 14 hours from 1700 CST 2/4/2013.
